2014 World Cup: Ex-Ghana defender Sammy Kuffuor wants John Mensah, Isaac Vorsah in Black Stars squad

Published on: 07 May 2014
Sammy Kuffuor says John Mensah and Isaac Vorsah must be named in Ghana's squad next week

Ghana need former captain John Mensah and Isaac Vorsah back in the side to provide leadership in defence, says former Black Star Samuel Osei Kuffour.

Centre-back Mensah, 31, recently returned to club football in Slovakia with FC Nitra after a year out but a recurrence of a back injury has left him sidelined since March.

However, Kuffour believes Mensah should still go to this summer's World Cup.

"Every team needs a leader, especially from the back. When you have John Mensah there is security," Kuffour told BBC Sport.

On Monday Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will name his provisional 30-man squad for the tournament in Brazil, which takes place between 12 June and 13 July.

Ghana have been drawn in a tough Group G alongside Germany, Portugal and United States and the chief concern among Black Stars fans is the team's defence.

Appiah has alternated the right back and left back slots between different players and tried at least three different pairings at centre-back through the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup qualifiers.

Kuffour has called for a return to the experienced centre-back pairing of Mensah and Isaac Vorsah, who played together at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where Ghana reached the quarter-finals.

"There are good players at the back but you need someone who has personality, who can drive the team along," he said.

"Recently I have not seen anyone doing that even though there are good defenders. That is why you need Mensah and Vorsah."

The question is whether the pair can be fit. While Mensah has his back problems, Vorsah has been out for a year with a knee injury - although his Austrian club, Red Bull Salzburg, have predicted the 25-year-old will recover in time for the tournament.

"Ask yourself how many of our players play in the top leagues in Europe," said Kuffour. "It's not easy for Kwesi Appiah to make the decision to bring any of them back. It takes courage to do that. Kwesi Appiah knows what they mean to him.

"If he takes both players I won't be surprised, if he he takes only one I will be very happy."

Ghana face a tough task at the 2014 World Cup where they face Germany, Portugal and the USA.

So that they can allow in cheap goals like you did in Germany 2006 against Italy? Never!!!

Thats how Kuffour was taking to Germany and gifted free goal. Selection should be based on performance and form, not sentiments

leadership in defence don't mean shit if they are not playing good. They are out of form and cannot to included period. So far the defenders have done great up to this point so whats your beef? These favoristim and nepotism will kill us. When you were playing in 2006, with all your leadership in defence what did you do? Idiot.

Sammy Kuffuor has a very short memory. He should recall how he was out of form before Germany 2006 and how his error against Italy led to our 0-2 defeat! Good defense is a team effort. You can have the best central defenders but if your team doesn't help out you will concede lots of goals!

Kaka, Essien and Muntari are in the same club, AC Milan. Kaka gets to start games regularly unlike Essien and Muntari. Muntari usually starts from the bench while Essien is confined to the bench. We all see how Kaka score goals and does well when he plays. Yet he did not make the Brazil World Cup squad. Ghana can't do without Essien and Muntari, the bench warmers, and we expect to win the world cup? If Kaka didn't make it, why should we consider Essien and Muntari? They should be dropped. The so called experience will not win matches for us. Youth, fitness, talent and skill, as well as tenacity are far better tha experience that the washed up old folks possess. Akwasi Appiah should be realistic and brave to do what is right.

Sammy Kuffour is suffering from illiteracy syndrome. Why not you Kuffour? AA can gamble on Vorsah but not John Mensah.

hahaha, Kuffour, i want Abedi Ayew and Baloteli in the Ghanian squad too, but that doesn't mean i'm going to get it. lol "Every team needs a leader"????? has the sky fallen since Mensah and Vorsah has been out? granted the back isn't as good as it was in 2010, but overall leadership still lives in gyan and the 2010 veterans.... take it easy Kuffour.. Vorsah's potential return is a good sign though..

Kuffour you are wrong on this one,we can't afford to gamble with the defense.the coach knows is a big mistake to do this.

Is very clear that people like mr kuffour as an old player if given a team will be sacked within 6 months . Mr kuffour pls don't do selection base on names but base on performance current one for that matter .

Others are calling 4 local defenders, others old retired legs, others Welbeck and Balloteli, while others wants superstitous intervention from the Ashant King, and some 4 inclusion of sluts in ghana camp, etc, etc.. Too much punicking. My humble conclusion; " 97.5% ghanaians are alcoholics".
