2014 World Cup: Ghana coach admits facing final squad naming headache

Published on: 26 May 2014
Kwesi Appiah says he is struggling to name Ghana's final 23-man squad.

Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has admitted his players are making it very difficult for him to name his final 23-man roster for the FIFA World Cup finals.

The ex-international was impressed with the level of commitment shown during the training sessions in Ghana.

Appiah named a preliminary squad of 26 with Stephen Adams, one of three goalkeepers, as the only locally based player in the squad.

After a three day non residential camping in Ghana which was rounded up in style with a 6-1 thumping of a local select side, the Black stars have moved to Arnhem to intensify preparations.

Appiah says the work ethic of his players is making it difficult to omit three players from the squad.

“The team has responded well in this few days of training in Ghana. Everybody is looking focused and giving his best to make the team,” Appiah told

“But it’s the kind of headache every coach wants, it would not be easy cutting it down but unfortunately at some point in time it will have to be done.”

The Black Stars will play the Netherlands on 31 May in a pre-World Cup friendly.

Final say: Anyone who has followed these players regularly knows that both Adomah and Jordan are very hardworking players, from defense to attack! Adomah has been praised by his coaches for his willingness to help out in defense. Wakaso is a nutty character. His discipline is suspect! And as has been stated already we are spolied for choice with left-footed players! Either Inkoom or Afful is surplus to requirements, only one will be needed. One also of Aquah and Accam will be have to go! Accam because Waris has a similar style and has already proven his worth, Acquah because he has no real game changing weapon nor the big game experience of either Rabiu or Essien. But the coach will have to judge whether Rabiu has sufficiently recovered for the energies needed in a tournament. Whatever the case, Ghana's starting eleven should be close to this: Kwarassay, Opare, Boye, J. Mensah, Schlupp, Muntari and Essien or Rabiu, Ayew, KPB, Kwadwo Asamoah, with Gyan alone for 75-80 minutes, then Waris comes in either for Gyan, or one of the attacking midfielders depending on how the game is going!

We ghananians must take it upon ourselves to do more research about these players. Please do not sit at home and listen to any of these ghanaian reports. They are bais. I got reject to work for a radio station. I will not state thier name. I did a report for them and they decline it because they said it was on fair on some of the players in the squad. Instead they asked me to lie and creact a good character for one or two players that they have taken money from. No no no was my answer. When my visa comes through for the usa i will be leaving ghana gor good. I respect all the players in the camp who played regular football for thier clubs. Hope they all make it.

Union Leader, cutting Wakaso and Rabiu will only happen when they're proven unfit. Other than that, 2 new faces and one old guard will go. Where all 3 may come from the midfield or 2 midfielders and 1 defender. As a result, my possible 3 to take early shower from the 26 in camp baring any injury will be chosen from this group. Accam, Wakaso, Rabiu, Acquah, Sumaila, Nkoom and Opare. The remaining 19 are safe and Brazil bound.

Inkoom, Aquah and Adomah should be drop! Inkoom because Opare and Afful are more suitable for the right fullback position and wakaso can supplement the effort of Schlupp when the need arise., Aquah because He's below Essien, Sulley, Rabiu and Badu in the holding midfield role. Adomah because Atsu, Dede,Accam, waris, Jordan and kpb can all operate at the right side of the midfield and these players are more tactical and skills than him Adomah

Lol. I think our coach thought he knew his final 23 but with the hard work of the young guys I hope he is revising his notes. And j. White is right. We can't go to the championship with just two strikers. I felt that the idea of adding kpb to the strikers was to drop Jordan and make a fake case that three strikers are enough when we all know kpb is not a striker. All the same whatever the case may be, we have attackers this time who are better than what we had in Techie Mensah, Razak Pimpong and Prince Tagoe during past world cups. The coach is truly spoilt for choice and I hope he stays true to himself in his selection. Hodgson said that to him experience alone wasn't enough hence his dropping if some experienced guys. In Ghana experience and past achievement is the key argument not consistency or current form.
  • papa nkrumah says:

Is there a way of keeping wakaso, Afriyie, Adomah and Jordan and still managing to drop some OTHER three from somewhere? These guys all have something unique that other players don't provide.
  • Union Leader says:
    May 26, 2014 01:02 pm
I can't believe all of guys still think Adomah must be dropped. Take this from me, Adomah is going to Brazil, period! The gaffers have said it, he's the only natural wright winger we've had in a long while and depending on the system for a match determines whether he starts or start from the bench. Usually when it's a 4 4 2, he starts from the bench, any other variations and he's in the mix. At the last World Cup , 2 players played that position, first it was Tagoe, after he flopped badly in the first game Inkoom was made to play that role and he did quite well . Now we have Adomah , a natural for that role, do you think the Coaches will drop him ? And he's in form .why do you people forget so easily ? Or is it that you don't know the game? Baring no injury Adomah is among the 23. Watch this space !

@ j. white: I totally agree with you. I was gearing (still am) for Accam to show up in Ghana and rake in couple of goals. He did not, but still has a chance to show something against the Dutch, else he might be dropped for now and brought back in the play in the AFCON. We can afford to drop Wakasso and Jordan (if Accam shows up) and another midfielder.

  • A cool Guy says:

The reason is that the left footers are too many, Muntari, Dede, Asamoah Christian Atsu. Basically, they are all ahead of Wakaso who has just recovered from injury yet to pick form. Wakaso is therefore surplus to be dropped Midfield is also packed with experienced Essien, Badu, current form Acquah so Rabiu who also just recovered from injury should be dropped. Jordan should be dropped because among all the top strikers he is the least but he has a bright future with the Stars.. Strikers[ 1. Gyan, 2. Warris. 3. KPBoateng ] You can also drop Rashid jittery to cause penalty as a give away to our opponents can also be dropped. Now the players to be dropped are Wakaso, Jordan, Rashid or Rabiu so no headache coach AA.

AA i disagree with you. In fact it should be the reverse if you have really opened your eyes. There are three people who i think are not ready. They are Essien, wakaso and muntari. Essien is among the most inactive players called and therefore should have been very serious with the home camping or is there anything that is being covering up? Infact, this is the period he actually needs to excuse himself from the BS proper. Wakaso said what? He forgot an important document? He is disorganized as has always been throughout the season at Rubin. Muntari simply see himself as a bigger player and does not want to travel with the rest of the team period! Is it not the same muntari who hired his own jet to avoid travelling with the rest of the team? Muntari just cannot leave behind his ego. If AA want to maintain discipline and the momentum gathered by the young lads the earlier he drops these three players the better, afterall the old duo know this is their last world cup and are prepare to create didvided BS before they leave. Nasri has been dropped from the France squad! Does this ring a bell to AA? Hmmmmm

Technically it doesn't make sense to drop Jordan and Accam together. Else we'll be left with only 2 natural strikers, and that is not good for a tournament. Even in 2006 we went to Germany with 4 strikes, and each of them played in our matches. So going with only 2 strikers will be a dangerous gamble. We have 11 midfielders (KPB is not a striker). So if anything 2 of midfielders should be dropped alongside 1 striker. Alternatively the coach can decide to drop 1 striker, 1 midfielder, and 1 defender, provided he can shift one of the midfielders into defence when needed. We need a good balance in the squad.

1 goalkeeper, 1 defender out and 1 midfielder out which makes me believe Stephen Adams, Rashid Sumaila, and Mohammed Rabiu should be dropped. We have few strikers and that's why we need to send both Jordan and Accam to the World Cup. The bottom line is we need to score goals and these two guys are strikers remember.

I know wakaso ll not be drop because he is the only true FREE KICK TAKER in squad and his free kick accuracy is better than muntari! In the WC, is hard to break teams down in open play and set pieces ll be one of key weapons!! IT LL BE A MISTAKE FOR AA TO DROP JORDAN TOO! My question is this,DO WE HAVE AN IMPACT PLAYER OR A SUPEE SUB ON OUR BENCH? If we don't have one on the bench, then JORDAN IS THAT PLAYER! Jordan can be use as a SUPER SUB during the dying mins of the game and this chap can become the REVELATION IN BRAZIL if he is use as such! I have study him very well and he can be OUR SUPER SUB OR IMPACT PLAYER!

@ Assisi your ignorance of the game is astonishing . FYI 3 goal tenders are require for such tournaments. Personally I think the 3 cuts will come from defense and midfield( one in defense , 2 in midfield) . In defense it's a 3 way battle btw Inkoom, Opare and Sumaila. It looks like Inkoom is going down. Again , 3 players are involved in midfield,Wakaso, Rabiu and Acquah. It looking increasingly like Wakaso and Acquah. Watch this space !

With the kind of players in camp, think it would be surprised me if Jordan is dropped bcos as far as current form is concerning Jordan is ahead of Waris. Compare their last 4 matches played in France and Judge yourself. You can also watch them on YouTube in case you have been only talking without watching their current form. When last did Waris score in France? wat abt Jordan Ayew? How come gh judges poorly like dis? it always amazes me!!
