Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has confirmed midfielder Michael Essien refused to take part in the warm-up session before their final match against Portugal.

It is unknown why the AC Milan ace decided to boycott the pre-match requisite but it has been rumoured that he was expressing support for his close pals Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng who thrown out from camp.

Essien had lost his starting role in the team and played only one match- coming off the bench in the 2-1 defeat to USA in their tournament opener.

“I was there myself but when I went I back in there, my technical team said Essien didn’t take part,” Appiah confirmed.

“So I wrote it in my report and the management was suppose to take action but because the match was over and our tournament had ended nothing was done.

“I will leave it to the management team to decide the punishment for him.”

Two days after Ghana’s elimination, Essien gave a brief reaction to numerous questions and appeals asking him to advice Boateng and Muntari over their reported indiscipline in camp.

He seems to have rather defended the actions of the duo by replying on Instagram; “@acheamponglilian advice your so call FA not Sulley.”
