Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has confirmed AC Milan star Michael Essien as the deputy captain of the Black Stars ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The experienced midfielder according to coach Appiah, is the next in the leadership hierarchy in terms of seniority in the Black Stars team.

Ghana has been without a substantive deputy skipper ever since Asamoah Gyan was installed as the captain of the side before the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sulley Muntari has deputized on occasions where Asamoah Gyan has been absent or substituted during international matches.

But coach Kwesi Appiah has now confirmed Michael Essien as the next to take the captain’s armband in a game situation where Asamoah Gyan is being substituted.

“If Essien is in the game he will take the captain’s armband because he is senior to Sulley [Muntari],” Appiah told Metro FM.

“Asamoah Gyan is the substantive captain but if he is leaving the game and Essien is in it, he will take the armband.

“Next to him is Sulley Muntari.”

Essien has been excused from Ghana’s early preparations for June’s tournament in Brazil which commenced on Tuesday in Accra.

He will link up with the team in Rotterdam where the team will be based for 11 days before moving camp to the USA.

Come on Ghana, the captain band is not for show or for who came first and who is old. Asamoah gyan was given this captain band to compensate him for exiting the team when he couldnt bare the guilt of his irrational self glory seeking attitude that saw us droping from key competitions, and that was surprising because the guy could hardly captain himself when the need arises. Muntary has that leadership quality yet it was given to Asamoah. Now you are about to give assistant captain to essien who has also proven he can not lead a team because he has been running away from this assignment since ages because he knows he does not have it in him. Come on.. People like Paintsil, muntary, andre ayew are the kind of players that deserve captainship and not just any body. We think we have the best person as captain but he is yet to be tested and the world cup is the best place for this kind of examination that I honestly know Asamoah Gyan can not afford to pass.

@Spirit....if its your wish to see Gyan fail in Brazil 2014 then you will be disappointed. This WC is not for him to prove anything to anybody. He was the lead goal scorer for Africa and Ghana at 2010 WC.He excels when the likes of Drogba fail to glitter. For the records, Gyan & Roger Milla are the only african players to have scored 4 WC goals...Gyan therefore has the opportunity to set a new record...By the way, who cares about deputy captainship?

Pls let us bury some of these minuscule sidetracking & concentrate on the big picture - doing much better in the impending Brazillian task. Captain or no captain we are moving stones/rocks this June/July. Let bygones be bygones

i have always supported AA but with this decision i disagree with him because i do not remember any single match that Essien has captain for the Stars and have won it before so AA please think twice

@ Nana good point. All these players including Prince Boatemg have maximum respect for Essien. I can't believe some people on this forum have consistently demanded that Essien be dropped based on poorForm. Form my foot ! To all those detractors I will ask them to go watch Gh vrs Egypt in Ksi. Essien was by far our best player. Then again, I don't think these people understand what it would mean for a young player of say Afriyie Acquah playing alongside Essien in midfield .it raises his morale and confidence. Sometimes I wish these people will shut up and let the Coaches do their work.

I agree with @spirit. Although Muntari has had problems with the coaching staff and FA previously he has never quit the team and that dedication should be rewarded. Giving the captain's band to players who have quit the national team for flimsy reasons is a slap in the face of dedicated players. I also believe Muntari displays more leadership on the field than both Gyan and Essien. That is Appiah's decision to make and we'll support it but I do believe Sulley should have been made deputy cos Appiah's logic does not hold because both Essien and Sulley are more senior to Gyan.

Ghana has de potential and I think they can challenge big teams if they play as a team but if they r plays who want to make names 4 themselves then it will be rough

Guys, Essen is a good choice. Selecting a captain/co-captain is not about rewarding players. It's about a player who can bring cohesion in a team. One all the players will listen to, trust and obey. When the going gets tough, he has to be the one they will look at and be motivated. One to take the lead, and pull the team with him. One the players can confide in. I think Essien is not the perfect choice but a good one.

All that I want essien and gyan to be doing is to scream at our players during the course of play like Stephen appiah did in Germany 06!! Our players lose concentration at eveey min esp when we are leading and is about time these experienced players start to issuing instructions and start to yell!! In our match against serbia in south Africa, our game changed the moment Stephen appiah stepped on the field because he started given instructions and this is what is missing from gyan or essien!!

The best decision Ghana ever made is to appoint AA as the coach!! This guy is truly blessed !! This is a coach who listens to the-fans and give them what they want!! Smooth WC qualification, smooth team selection, smooth selection of captain and his deputies! Great coach indeed and u ever improving!! Humility is everything and now is the time to show the WC your smooth tactics!!

Looks Essien and Sulley are already on the plane to Brazil reading into this so I'd its 3 from Wakaso,Rabiu,Acquah,Adomah,Jordan and Accam not to make the final 23. I would leave out Adomah dont think he's up to it and Rabiu and Wakaso due to they're lack of playing time.

@ spirit revise ur thoughts thoroughly before u turn them into words cos ur utterance obviously BETRAYED ur intelligence. don't be such a prat!... Think before u talk! Gyan arguably deserves the nod over Essien in terms of consistency, commitment and character.

Coach Appiah has made the pre-emptive strike. All of us calling for deputy captain Essien's head should now rally behind him and give him our unwavering support. Coach Appiah has named him as part of his final 23, the guy is now untouchable. We have to find the weakest three players who will be cut else where. Congratulations Michael now it is time to put up. No injuries and no yellow cards. I remember the World Cup in Italy. With you on the squad the Black Stars would have been competitive against Brazil. Coach Appiah has gone to bat for you and I know you will play your heart our for him just like you did in Egypt!

Great choice by the coach. Ess has experience all over Europe and has the respect of his peers on the blackstars. Yes - he abstain from BS duties to get back in good health and form, sue him. Not for nothing but wasn't it Sulley who had issues with the coach when he was subbed out of a game during qualify rd? No one is a perfect captain, just the right choice. This isn't about Ess being better than Sulley as a player or an extension of the coach on the pitch. But I think the coach can pick who is best fit to be deputy captain for this talented squad. So many peekaboo coaches in Ghana. ....bold to defend forever
