Schalke 04 ace Kevin Prince-Boateng believes Ghana have been strengthened for the 2014 World Cup by the return of midfielder Michael Essien.

Boateng and his teammates missed the services of the AC Milan at the last tournament in South Africa where they reached in the quarter-final.

Essien was excluded after undergoing surgery to correct a knee injury he sustained at the 2010 Nations Cup.

Although there are doubts about Essien’s current form and during, Boateng says his inclusion has bolstered the squad for the challenge ahead.

“It is very important that Essien is back. He was a key player we lost. That way our midfield will get much stronger, I believe," the former Germany youth international told Goal Ghana.

“Thus, we also have a chance to win against the Germans. Already at the last World Cup, we were one of the few teams that caused problems for Germany."

Ghana will face USA on 16 June in their Group G opener before engaging Germany and Portugal.
