Ghana midfielder Michael Essien will have to pass a late fitness test in order to be available for the second 2014 World Cup game against Germany on Saturday.

The AC Milan started returned to full scale training with the Black Stars team on Thursday having sat out training the day before with a toe injury.

The 31-year-old is struggling with a toe injury which is believed not to be as serious as initially feared.

He is however feeling some slight pains in the toe which has prompted the Ghana medical team to continue to assess the situation as long as possible ahead of the crunch game against Germany in Fortaleza.

“The pain in Michael Essien’s toe has subsided and has gone down drastically,” Ghana FA spokesman Ibrahim Sannie Daara said at the team’s press briefing on Thursday.

“He has started training with the team but the doctors will continue to monitor the pain in his toe and will decide whether he will be able to play in the game against Germany.”

Ghana is in desperate need of points following their opening day defeat to the United States last Monday in Natal.

The Black Stars look to secure results against Germany and Portugal in their subsequent games in order to stay alive in the competition.
