2014 World Cup: Kwadwo Asamoah appeals to Ghana coach Appiah to play in attack against Germany

Published on: 19 June 2014
Kwadwo Asamoah was played in defence in their match against the USA

Kwadwo Asamoah has appealed to Ghana's coach Kwesi Appiah to put him back in a more attacking role ahead of a key FIFA World Cup clash against Germany on Saturday.

Asamoah, Ghana's footballer of the year for the past two years, was devastated by the Black Stars' 2-1 defeat by the United States on Monday.

The 25-year-old was used as a left-sided defender in a loose 4-2-3-1 formation that did not work in the Group G clash.

He has found it difficult to change from his normal role at Juventus as a wingback in a 3-5-2 formation.

"I'm the kind of player who attacks a lot. My style is different, I'm not a typical defender," the Juventus midfielder told AFP.

With World Cup survival probably hinging on Saturday's game against an ominously strong looking Germany, Asamoah feels he is being underused.

"I attack, try to dribble one-on-one and make crosses and shots," added Asamoah.

"I'm not a left back. And I'm finding it difficult because I'd like to show what I'm capable of and show that I can do more."

Asamoah is primarily known for surging runs up and down the left flank that allow him to help out in defence while creating goalscoring opportunities for Juventus stars Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente.

He scored only two league goals last season, but one was a screamer from just inside the area that gave Juventus a precious 1-0 win over Fiorentina.

Appiah has set a target of Ghana reaching the semi-finals in Brazil. They made the quarter finals in 2010 in South Africa having been beaten 2-0 by Germany in the group stage.

But that looks a tall order after the defeat to the United States and Germany's crushing 4-0 win over Portugal. Defeat on Saturday would almost certainly mean the end of the campaign.

Ghana's mediocre performance against the United States was followed by reports that the squad was upset by unpaid bonuses.

After the game, Appiah played down suggestions, spread by social media, that there was unrest in the camp.

"I'm surprised to hear this," he said.

"I mean, fine. Some of the money hasn't been paid yet, but...if you look at the performance today, it's got nothing to do with money. We created a lot of chances but we didn't take them," according to the coach.

Do you think Kwadwo Asamoah should be played in attack? If so who should replace him at left-back and who should he displace in the Black Stars attack? And why doesn't he ask the Juventus coach to move him into attack? Make your views known in the box below:

juventus formation is a different formation. though asamoah comes back most of de tym but he doesnt play left back. juventus get better players n almost all their players are starters in their national side. the problem here is kwesi appiah doesnt no wat he is doin. so far all de coaches in de world cup is better than him. atsu is a gud player but he shudnt be a starter. asamoaj shud play dat position. how at all can you prefere jordan to kelvin. afful can play de left back so y shud he be benched. de only position asamoah can play in juventus is de position de coach is playin him. if not for dat position he wud be benched bcos he is not better dan vidal, chiellini , marchisio , come to tink of it paul pogba and pirlo. so nw u see asamoah onli chance on juventus is dat left wing. de black stars coach has no tactics. if de black stars win de players deserve de credit not de coach cos he does nothin. de onli tin better he can do is to make better selection

GSN,you are liars,a player wouldn't go and tell the coach where he wants to play.

Exactly. Asamoah, Muntari, KPB,and Ayew in the midfield would be great as all of them can score and also defend. This would leave Djan and Waris intack upfront.

Ghana has so may midfielders, few defenders. K. Asamoah your performance was fantastic against US. The 3-5-2 you play at Juventus may not work for us. So please do what is needed for the team.

@ Sam Praise. I agree with your squad. Slight problem is Essien and Muntari together will be too slow. I say we go with one of them for experience (the other comes on as a sub) and play either (Acquah/Badu/Rabiu). Either of these players will add a little more speed. I don't know if we will beat Germany but I certainly know we can. No team is "unbeatable." But to do that, I believe the Stars will have to 'die' on the field... e.g. how Mexico, Chile and even USA played.

K Asamoah is right to speak up, The World Cup is no place for experiments. Use your players where they have specialized and are comfortable. Do not take a fish out of water and wonder why it is not swimming or why it is dead. A 3-5-2 formation against the Germans will suit Ghana very well. Coach brought a ton of midfielders because his premise was that is where the team is most talented. It is time to use that strength. Kwarasey in Goal and he must keep a clean sheet in the first half or sub him for Stephen Adams. He has been active with his Club while Dauda was on the bench. The Glo Premier league is better than the South African league. Inkoom on the right, Afful on the left and Sumaila in the midfield. Forget about that bogus FIFA ranking of John Boye. It is an attempt to influence the Coaches selection. Boye is good but Sumaila has a more aggressive and animated personality and he will be coming with fresh legs. K Asamoah, Dede, Kevin Prince Boateng, Afriyie Acquah and Agyeman Badu in the midfield. All these guys will track back and help bolster the defense when the ball is lost, so no need to worry about a weak defense. Waris and Gyan pairing up in attack. I left out Muntari and Essien because Muntari is carrying a yellow card and he has a volatile personality and is so pissed off right now. Another yellow will rule him out of the Portugal clash and we will need him. Essien did not train with the team because of a bad toe. He needs to be 100% and prove it by practicing with the team before he can earn a start. This is the key to unlock the German juggernaut.

There is unrest at camp but it is a quiet one, it is under wraps because the players want to give the Coach the benefit of a doubt. Coach Appiah has to win to quel this unrest. Another loss will lead to open revolt.

The Juventus system is different in that they play three in the back whereas Ghana plays four in the back. At Juventus, Kojo Asamoah plays as a left wing back being part of the 5 in a 3-5-2 formation that allows him to both attack and defend. Ghana's 4 man defense means he plays more as a left full back with the license to overlap. The two roles are not the same. Besides, Juventus has the best midfield general at the world cup so far, Pirlo. We don't have that luxury. Kojo Asamoah's best position is as a deep lying playmaker just like Milo used him at the 2010 African Cup of Nations. He was mostly used then to both shield the back four and also play like a quarterback, orchestrating moves and joining the attack when appropriate. Kwesi Appiah or any Black Stars coach should use him as a deep lying playmaker and we will all benefit immensely. Go watch the 2010 CAN highlights and you will see what I am talking about.

I have kept quiet for a long time since our defeat against the yanks. The question is so when will kwesi appiah the student graduate n stop learning? the man is not up to the task.how can bench kpn n start jordan. in previous games ghana conceded early goals and as a trainer its ur duty to eradicate that problem. Look at the chile coach Sampaoli, dude was realy doing fireworks on the touchline. silent killer my foot. Many advocated for a local coach but u see wat is happening.favouritsm is going on. As for Opare the least said about him the better. African teams have realy disgraced africa at the wc. look at cameroon playing like school boys. Even the players are telling the coach to play them at their proper position. yawa move koraa ghana could have beaten the yanks easily but too many chances squandered. Against germany if AA has the balls and the Gutts to bench both essien and muntari,i will start both badu and wakaso in the midfield. have we forgotten about wakaso n badu so soon. ghana can spring a surprise against germany. portugal must definately beat usa and we must at least draw with germany.and then it will be showdown time with portugal. impossible is nothing

My only reservation about Sam Praises selection is Essiens availability, cos i gather he has a toe injury....but i believe either ACQUAH OR RABIU can play dat role in his absence..we must play de game against Germany like our very lifes depended on it,with absolutely determination, total concentration for a 100 mins if need be,and efficiency in front of goal, while keeping it tight at de back...De German job is very possible if only our players believe inthemselves n take de game to de Mannnschaft...Go BS..U CAN SURELY MAKE IT...IF CHILE CUD BEAT SPAIN,THEN NOTHING SHOULD STOP US FROM BEATING GERMANY..THIS IS CERTAINLY,MISSION POSSIBLE

YES I THINK I AGREE WITH KWADJO ASAMOAH SINCE HE LIKE ATTACKING FROM THE WINGS KWESI APPIAH SHOULD USE HIM THERE THIS TIME WE MUST NOT PLAY THE 4-2-3-1 FORMATION WE PLAYED AGAINST THE USA LETS GO TO THE 4-3-3 FORMATION WE PLAYED AGAINST SOUTH KOREA IN THIS FORMATION ITS EASY TO RETREAT AND GO BEHIND THE BALL AND DEFEND WHEN WE ARE NOT IN POSSESSION OF THE BALL BECAUSE THE GERMANS ATTACK IN MULTIPLES. FOR INSTANCE U WILL SEE THAT WHEN MESIT OZIL HAS THE BECAUSE HE IS VERY SKILLFUL AND CAN DRIBBLE PAST TWO OR THREE DEFENDERS AT A TIME U WILL MULLER, TONY KROOS,HUMMEL AND EVEN SOMETIMES KADERA IN THE BOX AND THAT CAN BE VERY DEADLY TO ANT DEFENSIVE SET UP IN THE WORLD SO PLEASE LETS GIVE KWODJO ASAMOAH AN ATTACKING ROLL WITH KELVIN BOATENG/ MAJEED WARIS AND ASAMOAH GYAN PUSH THEIR DEFENCE AND THAT WILL FORCE KADERA AND OZIL TO FALL BACK AND WE CAN MAKE IMPACT ON SATURDAY'S GAME . GOOD LACK SCORE LINE: GHANA -1 - GERMANY-0 PROBABLE LINEUP :KWARASEY,OPARE .HARRISON,JOHN BOYE,JONATHAN MENSAH, SULEY MUNTARI, AGYEMAN BADU, DEDE AYEW, ASAMOAH GYAN KELVIN BOATENG/MAJEED WARRIS, KWADJO ASAMOAH.

A Gyan &KPB as attackers

Essien my friends is too slow and far less agile now to play as a wing back,so if you need him in defence it must be as a centreback beside Mensah and Afful-or could try Boye as he did very well for Rennes in that position in the last 3 matches of the season and was a revelation to me playing at R/B-and since Wakaso was originally a leftback put him there and free up Kojo on the flanks. No team in the world is beyond defeat as who would have predicted that plucky Mexico would have drawn with Brazil and playing some pretty decent football at that.

You can't compare Juve to Ghana, Juve plays three standard, tried and tested defenders, in such a way that Asamoah will be able to move and fall back and it works for them. You can't ask why can't he ask his coach at Juve to play him where he wants, thats unprofessional question, he only said giving the situation at hand, he will be more useful in attack. Asamoah doesn't speak so when he speaks then you know something is wrong. This is my first 11. Kwarasey in goal, Inkoom at right back, Boye partnering Mensah in defense, Opare or Afful at left back, Essien in front of the back four partnering Sulley in midfield, Asamoah on the left, falls back to support the left back, Dede on the right and Kelvin playing behind Gyan in a 4 2 3 1 formation and we can handle any team. Potential substitutes, Atsu, Warris, Jordan, Badu and Wakaso.
