2014 World Cup: "We lost concentration and didn't take our chances"- Kwesi Appiah

Published on: 17 June 2014
Kwesi Appiah looked on as Ghana lost 2-1 to USA.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has put his side’s opening 2-1 defeat to USA down to momentary loss of concentration.

The Black Stars conceded the first goal under one minute when US captain Clint Dempsey cut through the defence and slotted in beautifully.

But the 2010 quarter-finalists staged a strong comeback to level the scoring on 84minutes through Andre Ayew.

“What I can say is that it was a very tough game. Playing at this level, many little mistakes can cost you dearly,” Appiah said.

“We created a lot of chances but unfortunately we didn’t make use of our chances and the USA make.”

Ghana are facing early elimination and must be at the optimum best to stop a vintage Germany side, who massacred Portugal 4-0 early on Monday.

Ghana totally outplayed the US and only unfairly lost this game for three main reasons: (1) Opare, Muntari/Rabiu & finally Boye had their defensive positioning all wrong on US'1st goal - should have forced play to the outside instead of inside (2) Muntari, Mensah and again Boye were positioned wrongly on US' 2nd goal from the corner kick (3) we created many scoring opportunities (21 shots on goal vs. 8 for US) but lacked composure upfront from all our players including even experienced players Gyan, Muntari & KPB. So forumites, our loss to US was due to a couple of mistakes and lack of composure by some key players and NOT due to player selection or coach Appiah's fault. Yes, given Opare's lack of playing time, Afful should have started @ right back but got the nod cos he's got more pace. Kwadwo Asamoah's role @ left back was the right call as we still created tons of scoring opportunities without him in central midfield - we just did NOT finish our chances. If we had been more clinical upfront, despite the defensive lapses, we could have easily won 4-2. So, please stop all this negativity as overall we completely outplayed the US and given Germany's average performance against a poor 10-man Portugal team, I can see us beating both teams to qualify for the knockout phase. Fix our defensive mistakes and have better offensive composure, and this team is good enough to beat ANY team at the world cup including a very average Brazil team!!!!

when choosing between two GOOD players always consider WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE over promising new talents. Every coach knows this. WHY PUT KPB on the bench for 60 minutes? And rather start ATSU? Akwasi Appiah, quality wise that is like ITALY benching Ballottelli, and saying I am hiding him for sometime. Hahhahaha. Akwasi APPIAH u have inferiority complex. Look how many chances we missed in the first half alone as a result of non-clinical finishers and lack of tournament CONFIDENCE. still Guys let us not criticise akwasi appiah too much because Luck played a part.

the middle was giving to america. we played the same way we played against korea. but this team the other team knew how to finish and defend. Every time i saw an aerial view of the pitch, mutari and rubio where nowhere to me found. there was no connection between our middle field and fowards .GSN knows nothing about tactics. After the korea game they gave rubio a high rating. and said he was great. i completely disagree with that. muntari/rubio are defence player who cant really defend. In 2010 Muntari started ONLY ONE GAME and that was because Andre Ayew got too many cards. I told my father after the korea game that J.ayew wasnt good enough to start. After one game everyone one wanted him to start. And how can u start Opare after Not playing even ONE MINUTE IN ANY OF THE TWO GAMES. The Kid doesnt know what he is doing. I remember in the Brazil friendly in london two year ago he got a red card in the first half. EVERYONE WANT A LOCAL COACH LOCAL COACH.But BEACUSE HE IS LOCAL COAH THAN WHAT? look at our local league. Appiah should have been fire after African cup b/c he did the same thing the previous coach did and he was fired.USA defense was more inexperience then Ghanas but they had better midfield players.

this was not about the players losing concentration, the game was lost from the bench! wrong selection and wrong positioning of players was the problem. AA you got it all wrong and for the first time, I will criticize you!

They created the wrong chances...FOOL. Crosses from the right flank which the taller Americans headed out. Why not go into the 18 if high crosses are not working? No attack went through the middle of the field and Klinsman was happy for that at post-game interview. The only goal came from the left flank and it wasn't a high cross. Another low cross from the left flank almost resulted in a goal. You don't only make selection as a coach, but coaches change things as the game is going on. FOOL with no Tactical BRAIN

Always a tough opponet Ghana, your side was a bit unlucky and probably should have earned a point. All the respect in the world and here's hoping we both make it out of the group. - signed, an American
