United States striker Jozy Altidore believes he could have scored against the timid Ghana defence had he lasted the entire duration of their opening 2014 World Cup game.

The 24-year-old burly striker had to be replaced after just 23 following a hamstring injury.

Altidore had been winning the physical battles against the shaky Ghana defence up until the time he was replaced to give the Black Stars’ back four some respite.

And even though his side went on to win the game, the Sunderland hitman believes he could have gotten in on the act had he not sustained the injury that forced him off early in the first half.

“I think so [feeling he could score against Ghana] I was feeling good but sometimes you have bad luck,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“They [Ghana defence] were difficult and strong at the back but I think the first minute goal helped us a lot and it is always tough for any team to recover from such an early goal.”

Ghana will now have to derive positive results from their subsequent group games against Germany and Portugal in order to progress further in the competition.
