Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris has been released by relegated French side Valenciennes to give him more time to rest ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Waris, who joined Les Athéniens on a sixth-month loan deal from Russian side Spartak Moscow, will miss Sunday’s final league match against Toulouse away.

The 22-year-old will have enough time to cool off before Ghana’s non-residential camping start next week in Accra.

Waris has been named in the Black Stars provisional 26-man squad for the tournament in Brazil.

"He returned to Ghana for personal reasons,” Valenciennes coach Ariel Jacobs said.

“Preparation for the World Cup starts on Monday and he has been released from his obligations with the Valenciennes."

He managed to score nine goals in 16 Ligue 1 matches for Valenciennes

Waris has three years left on his contract with Spartak Moscow.
