One of the most exciting stories at the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations has been the durability of the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and its pitch which at its conclusion will have hosted 22 matches.

The other two matches were held at the Nduom Sports Stadium to make up a total of 24 matches across the entire WAFU tournament.

The man responsible for this and who deserves all our praise for the beautiful free-flowing football we have seen is Frank Boahene.

Boahene is tournament's groundsman and CEO of Green Grass Technology.

He has also previously worked as the Head of Corporate Grounds at Fulham in the English Premier League and was in charge of all the pitches at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Even with all that experience to call upon, Boahene admits it has not been easy to keep the Cape Coast Sports stadium pitch in the best condition.

Nonetheless it is a challenge he has enjoyed.

“It has been a challenge to maintain the pitch with the amount football we have seen, but a fantastic challenge to be given the opportunity by Fox Sports to prepare such an important tournament which is the WAFU,” said Boahene.

“It's such a great experience for myself and my team at Green Grass Technology. We were absolutely delighted when we were asked to come in and prepare the pitch for this tournament.

“Normally you have a couple of days to rest and prepare the pitch, at least 48 hours - two or three days before a game, but with the turning around of the matches within 24 hours, it's been quite a challenge.

“Now it's been proven that it can be done. So I think whenever there's a challenge that appears anywhere else in the world, I will like to think we are the first to host an international tournament on one pitch.”

Boahene also believes the partnership between Fox and WAFU will boost the sport throughout Africa.

“I think it's a fantastic partnership. Sports or competitions always need a strong backing and it's fantastic for Fox Sports to come in,” he added.

“The exciting thing is that it's not a short-term deal. It's a 12 year deal which really will help WAFU to develop over the years.”
