Germany defender Jerome Boateng is nursing a stiff calf muscle ahead of Germany's last 16 match at Euro 2016, the nation's football federation DFB said on Wednesday

Boateng sustained the injury in his right leg during Tuesday's 1-0 win over Northern Ireland and was taken out of the game in the 76th minute.

Coach Joachim Loew said afterwards he was hopeful Boateng could return forSunday's game against a yet to be determined opponent, and the DFB said in a tweet the stiffness was subsiding.

Germany will play Slovakia this afternoon in their quest to make it to the quarter finals of the 2016 European Championship.

Boateng suffered a similar injury during the 2014 World Cup group match against Ghana but was able to play in the next game against the United States five days later.
