ACL 2017 MD1 - Group G: Kawasaki Frontale vs Suwon Samsung Bluewings preview

Published on: 21 February 2017

Kawasaki: Kawasaki Frontale are set to return to the AFC Champions League after a three-year hiatus when they host two-time Asian Club Championship winners Suwon Samsung Bluewings of Korea Republic in Wednesday’s Group G tie at Kawasaki Todoroki Stadium.

Kawasaki Frontale enjoyed a fine domestic campaign in 2016, finishing third in the J.League before narrowly losing out on the Emperor’s Cup following an extra-time defeat to Kashima Antlers. In their last AFC Champions League outing Kawasaki reached the Round of 16 in the 2014 edition only to be eliminated on away goals by FC Seoul after a 4-4 draw over two legs.

Opponents Suwon, meanwhile, return for their eighth appearance at the tournament. The four-time Korean champions made up for a disappointing league campaign in 2016 by lifting the FA Cup after a penalty shootout victory over FC Seoul in December. Suwon were eliminated at the first hurdle last year, despite winning their final two group games, after Melbourne Victory edged them on goal difference.
