Buraidah: Makhete Diop scored twice as Al Ahli from the United Arab Emirates joined the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Esteghlal at the summit of Group A of the 2017 AFC Champions League on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun.

Diop scored from close range in the 37th minute before Everton Ribeiro’s curling free-kick from close to the bye-line doubled the lead just ahead of the half-time break and Diop added a third 13 minutes into the second half following a poor clearance by goalkeeper Fahad Al Shammari.

Alassane N’Diaye reduced Al Taawoun’s arrears from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute, but Cosmin Olariou’s side cruised to a win that moves them on to seven points with two games left. Al Taawoun remain on four points and level with Lokomotiv.
