Adebayor scores as Togo eliminate wasteful Algeria

Togo revived their chances of going through to the quarter-finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations when they defeated Algeria 2-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday night.

Emmanuel Adebayor opened the scoring in the first half before substitute Dove Wome sealed the win for the Sparrow Hawks as Algeria failed to convert their chances for the second match in a row.

The first chance of the match fell for the fennec Foxes in the 14th minute when Islam Slimani collected a trough-pass from Sofiane Feghouli, only to blast his shot wide of goal.

Adebayor had a chance at the other end two minutes later when he leaped over Essaid Belkalem to meet a cross from Moustapha Salifou, but he also sent his header wide.

Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa then pulled off two decent saves as he kept out a good header from Adlene Guedioura in the 22nd minute before stopping a shot from Medhi Lacen a minute later.

However, the deadlock was broken in the 31st minute as Adebayor ran onto a headed pass from Salifou before slipping the ball past the stranded Rais M’Bolhi.

Algeria almost replied five minutes later but Slimani was denied by another good save from Agassa, who came out of his line to block his goalbound effort.

Vahid Halilhodzic’s side pushed forward in desperation after the break and in the 52nd minute Hilel Soudani could only sends his header wide after connecting with a Foued Kadir cross.

There were other opportunities with Slimani heading wide in the 70th minute while Yassine Bezzaz fired over the bar in 84th minute.

However, it was Togo who secured maximum points in added time as substitute Wome collected a through pass and raced into the box before sliding the ball past the goalkeeper.

The result means that Algeria will be eliminated from the competition after their final group match against Ivory coast, while Togo will fight it out against Tunisia as they look to finish in second place.
