AFC President sends condolences following Angolan stadium tragedy

Manama: Asian Football Confederation President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has expressed his deepest sympathy for the victims of a stadium stampede in Angola which resulted in several deaths during a local league match on Friday.

Shaikh Salman sent a letter of condolence to Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Mr Issa Hayatou, and Angolan Football Federation President Mr Artur De Almeida, to convey - on behalf of the Asian football family - his deepest condolences for those who tragically lost their lives as a result of the incident.

Shaikh Salman noted that Asian football shares the grief of the victims’ families, the Angolan people and its African counterpart. The AFC President also wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

In total, 17 people died and several others were injured after what has been described as a stampede during a league game between Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo in the city of Uige.
