Kuala Lumpur: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referee Assessors Seminar concluded in the Malaysian capital on Thursday.
A total of 76 assessors from across Asia attended the three-day seminar, which aimed to update and assess their knowledge on the latest Laws of the Game, ensure consistency in their evaluation of match officials’ performance, share teaching resources for the 2017 season and instill the need for continuous improvement to meet the AFC standards.
AFC General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John, in his opening remarks, said: “In the modern era of information, the role of the referee assessors has become more challenging than ever — relying on past experience alone is no longer enough. It is imperative that assessors complement their expertise with the latest developments of the rules and best practices.
“I also urge you to be resolute in ensuring the AFC continues to set the benchmark in the world of refereeing.”
On the first day, new referee assessors learned about report guidelines and their roles and responsibilities. There was also an English test and roleplaying session in a post-match debrief to help the assessors familiarise with the settings of their work.
A special session on team tactics was also included for the referee assessors to better understand modern trends in football which include styles of play.
Head of Professional Referee Development at the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) Oliver Raymond John and refereeing expert Fernando Tresaco Gracia joined the list of guest instructors. General Farouk Bouzo, Advisor to the AFC Referees Committee, also attended the seminar, sharing his experience as a national and FIFA Referee as well as an instructor.
