Afranie wants Ghana asst coach to stay

Veteran Ghanaian coach Emmanuel Afranie has urged the Ghana Football Association to retain AKwesi Appiah as assistant coach of the national team irrespective of who takes over.

Afranie, who handled the Ghana national team in 1984, is a backer for an indigenous Ghanaian coach to be appointed.

Now in-charge of debutants Tudu Mighty Jets in the Ghana Premier League, Afranie believes Appiah fits the bill to be second-in-command of the Black Stars.

"Appiah played for Ghana, he captained Ghana, has been an assistant for two years and is widely respected. Whoever comes to take over from Rajevac will need someone who knows the team from the inside and knows the players so from that position, Appiah must stay," the 2001 Fifa Under-20 World Cup silver winning coach told a local radio station.

"It is important that we keep those ex-national players with so much to offer as close as possible to the national team."
