Afriyie Acquah accepts Africa Cup of Nations snub in good faith

Posted On Tuesday, 18th December 2012

Afriyie Acquah in action for Parma

Afriyie Acquah has described his exclusion from Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations squad as “right and acceptable.”

The Parma midfielder was not named in head coach Kwesi Appiah’s provisional 26-man squad last Thursday.

The hard-tackling player was expected to make the cut after an impressive display in the second leg final round qualifier against Malawi away.

The 20-year-old scored Ghana’s only goal in the 1-0 win which wrapped up a 3-0 aggregate scoreline.

Acquah, owned by Palermo, says he respects the decision of the coach.

“The competition for places in the Black Stares is very competitive and I always understood that so I feel normal now,” Acquah said in an interview.

“I wish I had the opportunity to play for my country but that has been postponed, deservedly so I believe. I can only accept and respect the decision of Coach Appiah.

“I believe he will call me at the appropriate time when he believes I deserve a place.”

Afriyie, I have already spoken for you elsewhere. It has happened to many great players before you. You are a very special player with special qualities that is rarely found in players. You don’t only talk about what you can do before a game but you talk and state exactly what you are going to do and do it on the field of play. Take heart and let this exclusion make you stronger. Good luck in all that you do

  2. ike says:

The future BS is for you. Take heart and keep shinning in your team.

  3. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

AFRIYIE ACQUAH, DAVE ADDY AND RAHIM AYEW SHOULD HAVE REPLACED DEREK BOATENG, PAINSTIL AND KWADWO ASAMOAH

    • Nana Owusu says:

Kwasiato, Now u calling other players to replace others abi?? U are not the one who wont Afcon to be played in 10 year intervals bcos players have family to feed so they have to play for club instead of country?? Or u are telling us that the players u are calling for their inclusion don’t have a family to feed so they should play in 1 year interval Afcon?? U are a Joker.

      • GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

u are a born and bred fool. SHOW ME THE PROOF. U THINK I EAT GYIMI FOR BREAKFAST LIKE U? WHY WULD I WANT AFCON TO EB PLAYED IN 10YR INTERVALS? WAT CONTINENT DOES DAT? WAT CAF NEEDS TO DO IS CHANGE THE AFCON CALENDAR TO SUIT THE EUROPEAN LEAGUE. THE NORTH AND S AMERICANS HAVE DONE THAT.
I DONT NEED TO EXPLAIN TO U THE CONSEQUENCES OF CHANGING THE AFCON CALENDAR. U FIGURE IT OUT.

I IMAGINE KOTOKO HAS FOREIGN PLAYERS FROM EUROPE, ASIA OR SOUTH AMRICA PLAYING FOR THEM. THESE FOREIGN PLAYERS ALSO HAPPEN TO BE THEIR BEST PLAYERS. EACH YR, THESE PLAYERS HAVE TO LEAVE FOR 6WEEKS DUE TO CONTINENTAL COMMITMENTS. THEIR ABSENCE COULD VERY WELL JEOPARDISE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING THE LOCAL LEAGUE OR EVEN GOING TO CHAMPS LEAGUE IN AFRICA. WAT WOULD U DO? WELL, IF U HAVE REALISED, CLUINS LIKE MAN U, REAL MADRID, BAYERN MUNICH, BARCA, DORTMUND, PARIS ST GERMAIN, LIVERPOOL HAVE BARELY NO AFRICANS PLAYING THERE. IS THIS A GOOD THING? BITCHSS NIGGA LIKE UR TYPE HAS THE NERVE TO CALL ME KWASIATO…EVEN WCUP IS PLAYED EVERY 4 YRS, SO WHY WOULD ANYONE PLAY AN AFCON TOURNEY 1 EVERY 10 YRS?

  4. JNR says:

As much as i respect his professional response to being overlooked for the AFCON, he surely deserves to be in there in place of Derick Boateng. Correct me if i’m wrong but wasn’t Akwasi Appiah the one who said you will ONLY be called up if you play actively for your respective clubs?

Derick has hardly played at all at Dnipro this season and yet he gets called up? Whiles Afriyie plays regularly for Parma. Maxwell Konadu said Derick has always played well for the Black Stars whenever he is called up even though he never gets a look in at Dnipro, but so as Afriyie whenever he plays for the Black Stars so whatever reason they have for not including Afriyie doesn’t make sense at all, hmmm… Oh well!

    • Al says:

Totally agree…when there’s decent Defense, Derek is absolutely useless

      • Fred B. Kyeremeh says:

        JNR,
You are absolutely right on point with regards to Akwasi Appiah’s criteria for selection purely to be based on active playing time at club level. He said this at his first press conference after he had been unveiled as the new coach of the team. I guess he has gone against his own words by inviting Derek Boateng. I however believe he should be pardoned for some exceptional cases such as on Derek. I strongly believe his selection goes beyond just just performance on the field of play. According to Maxwell Konadu, the Deputy Coach,Derek provides the leadership that the team is currently lacks due to the youthful nature of the entire squad.Let us not forget that we flopped at AFCON 2012 due to bad leadership among other more important things. The coaches may have identified Derek’s leadership role as something that will be helpful to the team, hence his inclusion. Let us not forget that leadership is key at tournaments as this. Since the retirement of Stephen Appiah, the Black Stars have had issues which purely borders on leadership weakness. This is not to suggest that John Mensah isn’t a good leader. He has his own unique qualities as a leader but that may not be enough. In his absence Senior players like Paintsil and Derek will be needed to motivate the younger players.I agree with the technical handlers on their choice of Derek as the one to play that vital role in the team.Let us not forget that our legend,Stephen Appiah was included for W/C 2010 purely not based on form but based on his ability to lead thee team on and off the field of play.I believe Derek can play a similar role to our quest for honours. I bet he will not let the coaches down.

  5. lolvfunny says:

I don’t know why nobody is talking about the snub of the top goal scorer in the Swedish Premiere League (Waris)… I am amazed people have forgotten him so soon.

  6. Abega says:

GSN is doing a good PR job for Acquaye. Maybe Arsene Wenger can now sign him in January.
Nonesense stomach journalist, when was the last time the boy played 90mins. You collect money and come and wright foolish nonesense here.
Inkoom is waiting for you Saanie, you go see pepper proper. Anchi Duruwa !

  7. Dready says:

Derek boateng is a useless player. He is either delivering a back pass or he is passing the ball inacurately and this is the kind of player the kumasi coach wants in the team.AA is a very clueless coach for real.Afriyie Acquah is far better than useless derek.Sad some ghanaians call him a senior player.Painstil can motivate the boys better than derek.Derek has no leadership ability.Kumasi coach u better win the trophy or u will loose the job to a foreign coach.
