Al Ain needed Ghana FA clearance to field Gyan in Cup match

The Ghana Football Association invited striker Asamoah Gyan for last Wednesday's international friendly against Chile, according his club Al Ain.

The UAE top flight side claim it had to frantically lobby with Fifa and the Ghana FA to gain clearance for Asamoah Gyan to play in their Etisalat Cup match against Al Wahda to avoid sanctions.

Gyan was called up but subsequently announced his temporary retirement from international football.

Al Ain received an exemption certificate from Ghana on the eve of the game and clearance for Gyan to play from Fifa.

Fifa rules state that a player cannot play for his club for five days "in the event that the player, for whatsoever reason, did not wish to or was unable to comply with the summons [to the national team]".

Gyan responded by scoring twice in the 4-1 victory over Wahda on Friday night but Al Ain could not progress, taking his tally to 15 for the season.

Gyan's goal return has justified his season salary, which is more than €3 million and the loan fee of €6m paid to Sunderland for his services for 12 months.
