Al Hilal unveil Gustavo Matosas as new head coach

Riyadh: Saudi giants Al Hilal have unveiled former Uruguay international Gustavo Matosas as their new head coach.

Matosas, who won the Copa America and Copa Libertadores during his playing career, arrives from Mexico’s Atlas on a one-year deal, and brings a wealth of experience in Latin America.

After stints coaching Danubio and Peñarol in his native Uruguay, Matosas’ greatest achievements have come in Mexican football.

The Uruguayan led León to promotion in 2012, then the Liga MX Apertura title in 2013 and the Clausura title in 2014. His crowning glory, however, came at Club America, where he secured the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League crown.

The 51-year-old Matosas fills the gap left by Georgios Donis, who departed the Riyadh-based club last month.

Matosas is the first Uruguayan to lead Al Hilal since Omar Barras was at the helm in 1988.

Al Hilal also announced the arrival of two new players; Abdelmajid Al Rouweili, a forward with six caps for Saudi Arabia from Al Taawoun, and Majed Al Najrani, an attacking midfielder from Al Qadisiyah.
