Riyadh: Al Nassr have ended the reign of manager Fabio Cannavaro just four months into the legendary Italy defender’s time at the helm of the Saudi Professional League outfit.
Having taken over from Jorge da Silva at the end of last October, Cannavaro has struggled to get the best out of a side that were champions of Saudi Arabia last season after finishing four points above Al Ahli.
Following Thursday’s 4-3 defeat to Najran, a game which saw Al Nassr secure a 2-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes before twice throwing away the lead, the club’s hierarchy duly decided to part company with the 42-year-old World Cup winner.
During his 14 games in charge of the club, Cannavaro, who was previously with Chinese giants Guangzhou Evergrande (pictured), only managed six wins and leaves them languishing sixth on the league table.
Already 18 points behind leaders Al Hilal with ten games remaining, retaining the title now looks highly improbable and their current managerial vacancy is far from ideal with the new AFC Champions League campaign on the horizon.
For the 2016 edition of Asia's premier club competition, Al Nassr have been drawn in Group B alongside Iran’s Zobahan, Qatari outfit Lekhwiya and Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan, who they will take on first at the King Fahd International Stadium on February 23.
