Andre Ayew makes ten-man shortlist for CAF Player of the Year award - Asamoah, Badu axed

Black Stars winger Andre Ayew is the only Ghanaian player left in the ten-man shortlist for the 2012 African Footballer of the Year award after CAF pruned down the list late on Sunday.

Ghanaian midfielders Kwadwo Asamoah and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu were axed from the list after CAF reduced its initial list of 34 players nominated players for the top award.

Ayew now faces two weeks of anxiety to find out if he is part of the three-man final shortlist as he faces tough competition from the Ivorian trio of Didier Drogba, Gervinho and Yaya Toure.

The other players in the ten-man shortlist are Zambia star Christopher Katongo, Nigeria's John Mikel Obi, Senegalese striker Demba Ba, Alex Song of Cameroon as well as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon and Younes Belhanda of Morocco.

The two Italy-based players were among the three Ghanaians nominated by CAF in its first list of 34 players for the award but  now only Ayew will carry the Ghana flag for the top gong.

The Olympique Marseille star has been recognized for his 39 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit and scored 16 goals last season.

The 22-year-old helped Ghana to finish fourth at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Has already scored four goals in 12 matches for his club in the current 2012-2013 season.

The current shortlist will be passed on to head coaches and technical directors from CAF member associations whose votes will decide the eventual winner.

The continent's governing football body will announce the top three in the last week of November.

The winners will be unveiled at a ceremony on 20 December at a ceremony in Accra.
