Andre Ayew has revealed he contemplated extending his stay at Olympique Marseille into gradually making him a legend at the French club.

The 25-year-old will end his eight-year stay at the Stade Velodrome this weekend when plays his final game for Marseille.

Ayew leaves Les Phoceens at the end of the current campaign having failed to reach an agreement with the club over an extension to his expiring contract.

Marseille has been home to two other Ayew’s – Andre’s father Abedi and younger brother Jordan over the past 28 years.

The Ghana international says he thought of emulating the likes of Francesco Totti and Steven Gerrard in remaining at a single club for almost their entire professional career.

“It [remaining at Marseille] was something that my family and the people around me spoke about,” Ayew told the BBC.

“It was something at the back of my mind because a few players did careers like that – [Francesco] Totti, [Steven] Gerrard…

“It was somewhere in my mind but everything happens in this world for a reason so I feel that it was just not meant to happen like that.

“I’m getting ready to go to the next step and prove what I can do.”
