Angry Togo coach rules out picking Emmanuel Adebayor after no-show

Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor will not be selected for Togo again after he failed to respond to a call-up for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, according to coach Tom Saintfiet.

Saintfiet said the striker made no contact with management about their game against Djibouti on 4 September, which Togo won 2-0.

Adebayor played and scored the winner in a 2-1 qualifying win against Liberia in June but expressed his disappointment then that he had been stripped of the captaincy, and threatened not to play against Djibouti.

Saintfiet said: “If you are dating a woman who does not want to respond positively, then you must look for another woman. For me, it is clear that it is a player who does not want to play for his country any more.

“He does not want his country to be qualified for the next Africa Cup of Nations. He has agreed to play against Liberia, and not against Djibouti. For me, it is not the duty of a player to decide against which opponent he will play.”

Adebayor is currently in limbo at Spurs having been left out of their squads for the Premier League and Europa League. The club tried to get his £100,000 weekly wage off the books before the transfer deadline, but no agreement could be reached.
