Anniversary message for Hearts of Oak @ 99

Published on: 11 November 2010

Accra Hearts of Oak's low-keyed celebrations of their 99th birthday is highlighted by an anniversary message from the council of patrons of the club.

No elaborate program was rolled out for Ghana's oldest club but it is believed all efforts are being channeled towards the club's centenary celebrations next year which the club says would be grand.

"A sub-committee has been appointed by the board to draw a grand program for next year's centenary celebrations," administrative manager Ashford tetteh-Oku said.

Asked whether the club would invite an European club like Egypt's Al Ahly did during their anniversary, Mr. Tetteh-Oku says it'll depend on the club's financial status amongst other things.

"Why not?, we can bring in a Real Madrid or a Manchester United provided the timing and the financial support is right.

"I however must emphasize that it'll depend on the program that would be drawn by the sub-committee but then i can assure it'll be a grand occasion befitting 100 years of Accra Hearts of Oak," he added.

Message on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Limited

Today 11th November, 2010 is the 99th birthday of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Limited - indeed, one of Africa's greatest and oldest existing clubs. For surviving the hustle and bustle of this life all these years, it is very important to give glory and thanks to the almighty God who has brought us this far - "Eben-ezer".

Given the fact that many a club in the world, before and after 1911, have folded up, it should gladden our hearts on this occasion before our centenary next year, that the Lord our God, who was our help in ages past shall still be our hope for many years to come.

Usually, on such rare occasions, traditional norms require of us to acknowledge the invaluable sacrifice and contributions of our founding fathers whose foresight, vision, toil, tears and sweat have made us all proud "Phobians" today.

In between the last and current anniversaries, some distinguished servants of the Oak tree have been called to eternity. It is with great sorrow that we remember players like Agyire Fynn, Thomas Gambo Hammond, Yaw Serbeh, Chairmen JK Tawiah and Elias Okunor Teye. We also lost other die-hard and committed Phobians like Rose Klorkor Okine (Woman Tokyo) and Rev. Godwin Nii John Cheetham. May their souls rest in perfect peace.

At times like this we take stock of the past year and rededicate ourselves towards the future. However, in a clear departure, I would reserve this exercise for the centenary, but would be quick to add that inspite of our inability to successfully defend the Glo League trophy; we clinched this year's Top 4 Tournament. Also the anniversary month proved a good omen with the sweet victory over archrivals Asante Kotoko in Kumasi when we were tagged underdogs.

Off the field too, positive strides towards a better future were made. These were the near completion of our share floatation exercise and the appointment of a substantive Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Fred Crentsil for the first time since 2005. Together with your support and encouragement, these steps should be the driving force for a successful future.

Whilst commending the immediate past administraion for a yoeman's job in the face of numerous challenges that continue to face the club, i urge all the team up with the Board and Management to ensure that we continue to build a united and disciplined club for a greater future that unborn generations would be proud of.

The club presently has two dreams to fulfill: completion of the training pitch at the Phobiman and the grand celebration of our centenary. I challenge the Board and Management and all supporters to strengthen their resolve to actualize these dreams, especially the latter which is once in a lifetime event.

Finally, on this great occasion, I salute all members of the Oak tree family and wish them happy anniversary.
