Ghana star Annan makes Champions League debut for Schalke, boosts World Cup chances

Anthony Annan came off the bench to mark his Uefa Champions League debut for Schalke 04

Schalke midfielder Anthony Annan boosted his slim chances of making Ghana's World Cup squad after making his debut for Schalke in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday night.

Annan was a second-half substitute in their 3-1 defeat at Real Madrid which ended their hopes of playing any further part in the competition.

Annan, who had not played for the Royal Blues since the start of the season, had his chance as he came off the bench in the 81st minute replace Turkish midfielder Kaan Ayhan.

Compatriot Kevin-Prince Boateng was dropped to the Royal Blues' bench and did not play any part in the game as the Spanish giants sealed their progress thrashing the Germans on 9-2 aggregate.

Schalke went into the game with virtually no hope of progress after taking a 6-1 battering from the Spanish masters from the first-leg tie at the Veltins Arena, and manager Jens Keller decided to leave Boateng on the bench while he handed debut appearances to his fringe players in the competition.

But the former Hearts of Oak midfielder's entry could not help the Germans alter the fate of the game as Cristiano Ronaldo hit a double to add to an Alvaro Morata late strike.

After getting his first playing minutes of the season, the 2010 Ghana World Cup star will be hoping for regular appearances for Schalke in the Bundesliga.

This could help him force his way into the Black Stars squad for the World Cup in Brazil in June.

If Anthony Annan gets more playing time at Schalke do you think Ghana should select him for the World Cup? Make your views known in the box below:

This is a guy who has been very loyal to mother ,got injured and after his recovery nobody is talking about him but rather Rabiu whom to me is the shadows of Annan. The funny thing is he Annan is better than Badu and Rabiu and is competiting with the likes of Neustädster and kevin Boateng for starting role unlike badu and Rabiu who are competing with average players yet they're warming the bench just li he Annan. My question is why has Akwasi Appiah overlooked Ann since he recovered? This is the same coach who have been saying Inkoom and Adiyah was invited previously because of what they have done in the past and is still using the same justification for Dauda's call.i don't wanna say, Annan has been overlooked because he was a former hearts player and never play for kotoko.Annan is more tactical than Badu and Rabiu, he needs to be in Brazil! ! At least on the bench.

Am watching our twinkle twinkle lil ladies online doing justice to the almighty German team. Wow I have been very impressed with their performance. Its half time we're leading by a goal to nil courtesy of Gladys Amfobea header, our girls are playing very well. Hopefully they'll replicate the same performance in the 2nd half of even improved upon it. Go Girls! Go GH!!

By the way am very happy for Annan for making his UCL debut for Schalke. Arguably our best defensive midfield shield over the last decade, glad to see his career back on track once again. If he gets some more playing time before the WC squad is named then the likes of Rabiu, Badu, Afriyie Aquah among others probably wont get the chance to play. Annan is our best and most reliable defensive midfielder, all the best of luck Pablo.

Supposing our first group match with USA is being played today with the performance you saw from Annan will you honestly prefer him take up the holding midfield role for the BS rather than say Rabiu or Badu?

One of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen a player take. What prevented Annan from moving to Vittesse or even Rosenborg. Why can't you tell the management you want a loan. For me ill pick him ahead of Rabiu any day but because of dumb acting he might not even get the chance to play for the BS again. The only wat pablo can make it is by unseating Rabiu or Badu which is quite impossible. Stay in Gelsenkirchen and watch your colleagues play

@Chu I can't understand why Annan decided to stay with schalke knowing very well how things will be for him.He did a mistake but still if we're going by the words of Akwasi Appiah and some journalist, does what he has done previously .The dude has to be on the plane to Brasil. At least he's in the same situation like rabiu, wakaso, Dauda and even badu who has been on and off in the udinese starting 11 . Inkoom and Derek Boateng were not even warming the bench of dnipro but yet they were getting invite .The special preference given to setting average players in the stars ,is what makes me upset.

@ chu Annan was nearly signed by vitesse arnheim when schalke 04 loaned him there. He overly impressed in arnheim but when vitesse was about to sign the then coach of vitesse moved to belgian record champions Racing club Anderlecht so when the new coach came in he had his own vision of players so he was against the capturing of annan. So due to the situation annan was loaned from schalke to osasuna where he injured for most part of the season.

Sabacious, I agree with you 100%. I mean, how do you leave out Annan from the World Cup squad? Kwesiu Appiah must be truthful to himself. We want to go to Brazil to make an impact. Come on. Bring back our Annan the Pablo.
