ARSENAL - Arsenal boss backs Wilshere for England squad

Published on: 02 April 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated his belief that Jack Wilshere should be included in the England squad for Euro 2016 in France this summer.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been ruled out all season with a broken leg suffered during pre-season, and has had a career plagued with ankle and leg problems, but Wenger feels he has recovered well from his latest set-back and is approaching full fitness.

"It's very important for his confidence that he can go to the Euros and he can play," the Frenchman told the press. "It's also important to have a player of his quality available.

"I'm cautious with him now, but to be back fully competitive, it will take a few weeks."

Even though he has not participated in Arsenal's assault on the title this season, it is still very possible that he will be included in Roy Hodgson's squad and Wilshere's club manager believes him to be worth the risk.

"When you're a national team coach, you can take a gamble on one player but certainly not five," Wenger went on. "You can certainly take a chance on just one player."

Wenger commented that it could be the confidence boost that his midfield linchpin desperately needs: "When you're a footballer you want to compete at the top level and what is important is that Jack, who is frustrated enough, regains confidence."
