Italian giants AS Roma have named Ghana defender Daniel Opare as their chief target for the January transfer window.

According to the Italian website ilsussidiario.net, Roma coach Rudi Garcia is eyeing the powerful right-back as a replacement for Brazilian Douglas Maicon.

Maicon, 30, joined the Giallorossi this term from Manchester City but cannot be relied in the long term.

Garcia has been monitoring Opare, who can also play as a left-back, when he was coach of French Ligue 1 side Lille.

Opare’s contract with Belgian side Standard Liege expires in June this year and so could be sold at a reduced fee.

But Roma face stiff competition from French Ligue 1 sides Lille and Olympique Marseille who are also interested.
