Asamoah Gyan honoured his mother's memory with two goals as Al Ain claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Al Shabab on Thursday night.

Just two days after his mother's tragic death in a car accident, Gyan took to the  field to help The Boss reach the summit of the Pro League table for the first time this season.

Gyan's brace took his league tally to 14 goals in just seven games this season as the defending champions again demonstrated why they remain the team to beat.

The 26-year-old, who is mourning the death of his mother, converted a 43rd minute spot-kick to put the visitors in front.

The Ghanaian, who has a chequered past from 12 yards, made no mistake as he sent Shabab keeper Ismail Rabee Juma the wrong way. Unsurprisingly given his traumatic week his celebrations were muted.

Shabab responded in the second half with Brazilian Ciel getting the equalizer nine minutes into the second period.

But the Black Stars captain restored their lead, ten minutes later with a cool finish in the 64th minutes before Ismail Ahmed scored the third in the 76th minutes.

Shabab grabbed the consolation in injury time through Ciel.

Gyan has now increased his goal haul to 14 in seven matches and look poised to retain his goal king crown.

The former Sunderland man netted 25-times for the United Arab Emirates side last season to win the goal king gong.

He is expected to touch base in Ghana on Friday to mourn with members of his family following the untimely death of his mother Cecilia Love Gyan, who passed away through a motor accident on Tuesday.
