Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan scored a brace but was not enough from avoiding elimination in the Asian Champions League as Al Ain drew 3-3 with Al Ahli in their round 16 return leg clash.
Ahli advanced on the away-goals rule after the first leg ended 0-0.
Gyan opened the scoring for the Al Ain on four minutes but Ahli responded three times in quick succession shortly after half-time.
First, Luis Jimenezââ¬â¢s corner cannoned off Khamis and into the Al Ain net.
Moments later, Khalil latched onto Everton Ribeiroââ¬â¢s through ball and drove his shot in off the far post.
Then, as Ahliââ¬â¢s bench and travelling support celebrated still, Khalil prodded home a rebound from Ribeiroââ¬â¢s effort.
They pegged one back, when Gyan half-volleyed past Ahmed Dida, and then another in stoppage time through Rashid Essa, but they could not claw themselves back from the abyss.
The UAE champions no longer have a Champions League dream.
A 2014/15 season that promised so much has concluded in the worst possible fashion.
