Asamoah Gyan's resurgence makes Ghana favourites at Africa Cup of Nations

Posted On Wednesday, 30th January 2013

Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan put his squad into the quarterfinals at the Africa Cup of Nations with a beautiful goal against Niger.

With Gyan playing well and ending his international goal drought, Ghana have to be viewed as favorites to the win the Cup.

Gyan has faced a ton of criticism leading into the tournament and through the first group games as his Ghana side hasn’t lived up to expectations. He responded in a big way by scoring a goal and playing a part in the squad’s other two goals in the 3-0 victory.

In the sixth minute, Gyan fired home from inside the box on a beautiful pass from the right wing to give Ghana a 1-0 lead. Then in the 23rd minute, Gyan made a beautiful run out left, got the ball and casually delivered a cross in the box for Christian Atsu. The 21-year-old chested the ball down and cooly finished to give Ghana a 2-0 lead.

Gyan wasn’t done just then, as he flung a header at goal in the 49th minute. The goalie was barely able to knock the ball down and spilled the rebound in front of net. Ghana’s John Boye tapped the ball into the net to give Ghana a 3-0 cushion.

Gyan could have made the damage much worse, but missed a couple of opportunities in front of net. All things considered, it was one of Gyan’s best performances for his country in recent memory.

Ghana will need Gyan to continue to play at a high level throughout the tournament. If he plays like he did today or better, it will be tough for anybody to beat the Black Stars.

Pressure situations have gotten to Gyan, including his famous penalty miss during the 2010 World Cup. After his performance against Niger, Gyan looks set to prove those critics wrong as well and deliver strong performances deep into the tournament.

The pairing of Gyan and Atsu could perform much better than they have so far. The young Atsu has yet to break out like expected. If the two can find their form at the same time, they should connect for more goals like they did against Niger and make Ghana’s attacking incredibly dangerous.

In the next round, Ghana will play Cape Verde, who are making their tournament debut. They will be heavy favorites to knock off the under-talented Blue Sharks. Ghana shouldn’t have trouble getting past them and into the semifinals.

The biggest competitor to Ghana’s run at the Cup will likely be the boys from Ivory Coast. Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Gervinho have them playing well, but their defense is beatable. Ghana has the attacking play and defense to get a couple goals.

Ghana will go as far as Gyan will take them. Based on today, Ghanaians have to like their chances at bringing home the nation’s fifth trophy in the competition.

shutup and let the players play their game.
its been 31years. we are not at all new 2 coming close.

    • Chuku says:

I have been browsing through major news agencies websites but no one talks of Asamoah Gyan. It is only this website striving to hype him but it will not work. Gyan is old and does not have the agility and intelligence to score goals. He can only score goals in cheap league and games (Niger). Please let us focus on Wakaso, Atsu, Rainford Kalaba (Zambia), and Msekni (Tunisia)

      • texas says:

@ Chuku: go and offer your shallow minded advise to Niaja your home town. Which player can Niaja boast of? you jealous Ghana and our players who are making name for themselves all over the world. And whether you people like it or not Gyan is one of the best in the world…he has it all: been to two world cups and scored in both, made name for himself, and and keeps making money. What else do you haters and jealous assholes want from him?

    • GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

PLEASE, GH ARE NOT FAVORITES. WE DONT LIKE TO BE CALL FAVORITES. FOR 31 GOOD MY EARS, WE HAVE CARRIED AND WORN THE FAVORITES HAEDPIECEWITH NOTHING TO SHOW FOR. 31 YRS. NO MORE! TODAY WE CONSIDER OURSELVES PEASANTS, THE UNDERDOGS. WE ARE PREPARED TO WORK AND TOIL IN THE DARK UNTIL WE GET THE CHANCE TO EXHIBIT OUR LEARNED SKILLS IN THE DAYLIGHT. GYAN HAS BEEN ICE COLD SO FAR UNTIL HIS 3 POINT DISPLAY AGAINST LOWLY NIGER. FYI: NIGER ONLY HAD 1 POINT IN THIS CAMPAIGN. THIS ISNT SOMETHING GYAN NEEDS TO BE PROUD OF. WE R NOT FAVORITES!

  2. truth says:

GSN stop this BS****** abaa !!!!!!!!!!!!!! He scores a goal against Niger and all of a sudden he is being praised. How many chances did he even miss in the game.please stop this useless PR work and allow the guys to improve on their effort cos we are still no where close to good yet.

  3. Faisal says:

Nonsense. He could have scored 2 goals if he was a top striker..He still has a lot to prove cos his work rate is very low right now

  4. mojahadine says:

I am sick and tired of GSN heaping unnecessary praises on Gyan. He has not done anything to blow anyones mind at the AFCON, the last time I checked he has scored only a goal. But lets look at his performance, for all purposes he has been a lazy player and his lazy attempts at goal has caused Ghana 4goals but thank God that we have qualified. Clottey could have done what he has done so far and probably more, so lets just shut it.

This is the problem with mediocre Ghana media, most especially GSN. They are not purist, partial and objective. They have players they always want to hype and Gyan is one of them. They never criticize him when he is underperforming like now. But as soon as he does something that he should be doing anyway, they overhype it. Just look at this website and you will see majority of the stuff written are pure garbage, but they are trying so I do not fault them but rather applaud them.

Compare Gyan to Gervinho of Cote de Voir and you will see a big different in talent, determination and skill at scoring goals. Gyan’s talent and performance so far does not even come close. Let’s face it fellow Ghanaians, Gyan has not improved as a player since 2010, but has rather regressed, so lets just put it out there. Instead GSN, GFA and the other Gyan ass kissers should call him out on his mediocre performance at AFCON so far. We all also know that it is a result of playing that 4th division league in UAE.

    • Fu-Chu says:

You put it very well my brother. He missed many chances in the Niger game but no one said anything. Jordan Ayew will do better.

      • kwaku says:

STOP BEING A FOOL…WHATS THE MEANING OF JOEDAN WILL DO BETTER…….IS IT ALL THE CHANCES JORDAN GET THAT HE SCORES? EVEN THE LIKES OF RONALDO AND MESSI DONT TAKE ALL THE CHANCES THEY GET…SO AGAIN I TELL U TO STOP BEING A FOOL WITH COMPARISONS

  5. zambia is our toilet hole says:

EVERY ONE CAN SAY WHATEVER BUT I PERSONALLY DON’T GIVE NO SHOT TO ZAMBIAN FOOTBALL. MAYUKA DANCES ‘MAPUKA’AN IVORIANS POPULAR DANCE.

    • kofi says:

Eeeii these wonderful world of ours, are all these “never like Gyan people or hatters” leaving on this earth that we are all leaving or they just came on earth. These enenies and jealous idiots who will never appreciate anything Gyan does! listen and listen carefully!!!!Better get these facts right!!!!!
      1. Gyan has scored 4 world Cup goals so far, the biggest stage in world football second to lengendary Roger Milla who has scored 5 goals.African strikers in our time, have not scored these number of goals in the many world Cups they have played as Gyan has. So many Africa stars have missed glearing chances and missed crucial penalties sometimes in final games to lift the African Cup just to mention Drogba and Eto but yet they are appreciated by their country men.
      2. Gyan couldn’t score against Bowtwana in the 2012 AFCON in Gabon and you these same idiots insulted him that he did not score, he has scored against Niger and created the other 2 goals for Ghana to score 3 against Niger and you now saying Niger is a cheap team, which has been discribed as Ghana’s best game so far.
      3. Gyan has played in Italy, France , England and now UAE Pro League and pundits always says he makes scoring look so easy . Now Gyan has set a record in your so called branded lower league that a lot of players in their best form has gone to play but failed to achieve what Gyan has achieved so far. He has scored in each game from the first league match to the 10th league match and by the grace of God, he will continue scoring when he returns to UAE which is going to be a record in the UAE Pro League. For your information Gyan is going to set more records in the UAE Pro League and will make more money as some of you idiots jealous him because of the money he is making, so brace yourself up heart attacks because as far as God is still alive detractors and idiots like you will leave in your stupid dreams of enviness and jealousy.
people like you will not give credit to Gyan if Ghana wins the AFCON because of your jealousy. Only God knows the kind of useless people who keep insulting the biggest Ghanaian star in the world currently selling Ghana on the international scene day in day out.

  6. killer says:

Atsu got everything as a footballer but the only thing about him is that he is not too physical and he need to work on that which is going to help him a lot
