Jordan Ayew faces a Football Association probe for climbing over perimeter advertising boards to confront Watford supporters.

Ghana striker Ayew and team-mate Idrissa Gana Gueye were involved in a brief commotion just before the end of Aston Villa's heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at Vicarage Road.

Ayew, who had been substituted before Troy Deeney's two last-gasp goals gave Watford an undeserved win, apparently took exception to something he saw or heard in the Sir Elton John stand.

There is no suggestion the altercation amounted to anything more than a brief encounter.

Gueye may have got involved to pull Ayew away before the confrontation could escalate.

But the FA are aware of the incident and will await referee Anthony Taylor's report before deciding whether to ask the players for an explanation.

Villa's acting manager Eric Black said: “I was watching the game at the time and following the players on the pitch. There was nothing to it, absolutely nothing.”

Ayew, whose seventh goal of the season had put Villa 2-1 up, and Gueye may still have to explain why they felt it was necessary to wade into the crowd.

Players who leave the field of play to celebrate a goal among their own supporters are subject to an automatic yellow card.

The FA may take a dim view of Villa's unauthorised delegation among opposition fans.
