ATLETICO MADRID - Tiago\'s future is uncertain

Published on: 10 February 2016

Atlético were not going to be rushed into a decision on Tiago's future. The veteran anchorman was injured on 28th November and it immediately became clear that it was serious. The very next day he went under the knife and the club's medical staff estimated that he would be out of action for four months.

Tiago's recovery is being treated with the utmost discretion. He left the clinic in a wheelchair, was on crutches for several weeks, and reached the halfway point of the four-month period working on strengthening his lower-body muscles, before taking to the pitch and jogging last week. Obviously he was taking it easy and was constantly in the company of Daniel Castro, the squad's fitness coach.

The decision has now been taken... and Tiago knows the outcome. Atlético will offer him a new deal as soon as he proves that he can return to the field of play without any after-effects. At the age of 34, he is unlikely to be offered a long-term contract, but he will be made an offer by the 'Rojiblancos'. He is also expected to remain on the same salary that he is currently receiving. Although he could probably do better in this regard with a move abroad, he would not be losing out compared to his current deal.
