Atletico Madrid to open new contract talks with Chelsea and Southampton target Thomas Partey

Chelsea and Southampton hopes of capturing Ghana star Thomas Partey looks to be fading fast as his Spanish club Atletico Madrid are ready to open new contract talks with the midfielder.

The 23-year-old signed a contract extension in February which will keep him at the club until 2022.

However, the Spanish side are keen to tie him down for a longer period amid fears over the vulnerability of his low buyout clause- relative to the current transfer market.

It has been suggested that the Ghana international will be offered a new deal before Christmas.

Partey's buyout clause is set at  at €36m and there are suggestion it will be easier for any heavyweight to activate the clause and prize him away.

Atletico Madrid want to upgrade the clause to protect the club from losing the star midfielder to rival clubs.
