Australia Football Federation Chief Executive David Gallop believes the arrival of Michael Essien to the A-League will boost the reputation of the league.

Essien is expected to follow former Everton star Tim Cahill to the A-League in a deal reportedly worth $1 million a year to join Melbourne Victory.

Cahill's arrival is expected to increase the hype around the league and Gallop believes Essien who has played for top-notch European clubs can help draw more attention to the league.

"The number one on the wish list was Tim but a player like Essien can add to the halo around Tim in a way because it's another big global player that football fans will be excited about," Gallop said of the Ghana.

Essien abrogated his contract with Greek side Panathinaikos last week and is hoping to finalize his switch next month.
