Australia’s Birighitti joins Premier League’s Swansea City

London: Australian goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has joined the English Premier League’s Swansea City on a free transfer, the club has announced on its official website.

Birighitti has pen to paper on a two-year contract after leaving A-League club Newcastle Jets.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper is an Australia international, having made his debut against China in 2013. That remains his sole appearance for the national team, although he was in the Socceroos squad for May’s friendly international against England.

Birighitti’s professional career began at Adelaide United where – as a 17-year-old – he replaced Eugene Galekovic to appear in the second leg of the 2008 AFC Champions League final, which Adelaide lost to Gamba Osaka.

The talented custodian moved to Newcastle in 2012, where he made 77 appearances over four seasons, and was briefly loaned to Italian Serie B club Varese in 2015.
