Belgium boss Martinez not on same page as Chelsea keeper Courtois

Roberto Martinez says he does not agree with Thibaut Courtois' comments about playing in Russia.

The Chelsea goalkeeper indicated that it was a massive effort for the Belgium national team to travel to Sochi for a friendly against 2018 World Cup hosts Russia.

Ahead of Tuesday night's friendly, Courtois had said: "There are so many beautiful opponents available.

"Germany, France, England, Netherlands…you name it.

"And we go to Russia…"

Courtois has since been ruled out with a hip injury and returned to London for treatment but Martinez touched on his comments and insisted that a player needs to undergo all sorts of tests to prepare themselves for all types of football.

"Players sometimes think differently than a coach," said Martínez.

"Friendlies are currently regulated in a period which is very important for clubs. I have as club coach experience how players bring international success to their club, but after a negative experience can a player need a few days to get back on it.

"If you want to play with your national team and in big tournaments, however, you must be able to deal with it."
