Berekum Chelsea stun Kotoko to stay top, Hearts suffer defeat

Published on: 16 January 2011

Shock league leaders Berekum Chelsea established their title credentials when they brushed aside rejuvenated Kotoko by beating the giants 1-0 on Sunday to extend their lead at the top of the Ghana top-flight.

Hearts of Oak’s revival turned out to be temporary as they suffered a jolt when they were defeated 1-0 at home by Heart of Lions and title holders Aduana Stars moved to second thanks to their 1-0 over AshGold.

But outstanding leaders Chelsea once again stole the headlines when they impressively dispatched Kotoko to end the Kumasi side’s three-match winning run.

Striker Emmanuel Clottey was once the hero as the in-form attacker struck in the first half to secure his side’s win in the biggest game of the weekend.

Clottey proved stronger when robbing Kotoko midfielder Frank Boateng of the ball in the Reds’ half.

The former Denmark-based player’s quick exchanges with in-form Abdul Basit put him the box before putting the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Isaac Amoako.

The win took them to 41 points after previous second-placed New Edubiase were held to a goalless draw by struggling Mighty Jets while Aduana’s win moved to second on 30 points.

Hearts suffered a 1-0 defeat at home with their former player Gil;bert Fiamenyo no target while Medeama FC defeated Real Tamale United by two goals to nil.

The two sides ended the game with ten men on each side.

RTU skipper Tawfique Alolo was shown the red card as Medeama's Otuo Acheampong was also given the matching orders.

All Stars' poor run continued at the Robert Mensah Stadium where they lost 1-0 to Ebusua Dwarfs. Emmanuel Ackon scored the only goal for Dwarfs as the Blues' six-game winless run continues.

Emmanuel Odoi scored to hand King Faisal a 1-0 win against Berekum Arsenals at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Goals from Lousi Agyemang and Emmanuel Dogbe secured Kessben FC a 2-1 home win over Real Tamale United. The win halts RTU's impressive run in the second round of the league.
