Berekum Chelsea clinch Ghana Premier League title

Published on: 18 May 2011

Berekum Chelsea clinched the Ghana Premier league title on Wednesday with three matches remaining by beating Real Tamale United 1-0.

A late penalty kick converted by Emmanuel Clottey sealed victory for the club which was formed nearly tens years ago.

Chelsea now have a 13-point with 56 points which means they cannot be overtaken by second-placed Kotoko.

The feat serves the biggest achievement in the history of the club formed barely a decade ago and it comes as no surprise after having led the League for much of the season.

With this achievement, Berekum Chelsea will represent Ghana in next year's Orange CAF Champions League.

This is the second successive time in as many years that the Ghana League crown has been won by a club other than Kumasi Asante Kotoko or Accra Hearts of Oak.

Berekum Chelsea also becomes the second club from the Brong Ahafo Region to lift the Premier League title, after rivals Aduana Stars made history in the 2009/2010 season.

But there was bitter news for the Brong Ahafo region when BA Stars returned to the Division One League after their relegation from the top-flight was confirmed.

Their 1-0 home defeat to King Faisal means they will not be able to surpass Real Tamale who are second from bottom.

Ransford Kwakye converted a free-kick in the 29th minute and to make matters worse for the BA Stars a player sent off.

Mighty Jets beat Liberty Professionals 1-0 at the Karl Reindorf Park on Aaron Amoah's first half goal but remained in the drop zone.

Hearts of Oak moved up one place to tenth place after pulling a 2-0 at the Gyemfis Park in Bekwai  against New Edubiase United.

Douglas Nkrumah opened the scoring and Abubakar Moro added the second.

Wa All Stars slipped to a 1-2 defeat to Heart of Lions at home.

Ebusua Dwarfs thumped Berekum Arsenals 5-0 at the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium in Cape-Coast.

Defending champions Aduana Stars needed a Daniel Darkwa's 5th minute goal to dispatch Medeama Sporting Club.
