Big boost as Ghana players hit top form ahead of Sudan World Cup qualifier

Published on: 11 March 2013

Ghana's key players plying their trade in Europe and elsewhere have hit top form ahead of this month's World Cup qualifier against Sudan in Kumasi.

This comes as a massive boost for coach Kwesi Appiah just hours before he names his squad for the must-win game in the Garden City.

Following the Black Stars unimpressive performance at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa last month, there were fears about the future of the squad as some players did not live up to expectation.

But since returning to their clubs in Europe, the Black Stars key players have put their Nations Cup disappointment behind them by performing well for their clubs.

Hitman Asamoah Gyan continued where he left off as he scored twice for Al Ain over the weekend to continue with his impressive scoring form in the UAE-top-flight.

Albert Adomah's classy goal for Bristol City shows he has not lost his attacking prowess while central defender John Boye and Isaac Vorsah played the entire duration of the game for their Rennes and Red Bull Salzburg respectively.

Emmanuel Agyemang Badu and Kwadwo Asamoah have also been pivotal for Udinese and Juventus respectively by playing regularly for them and impressing.

Sulley Muntari's showing for AC Milan in their win over Lazio will delight Ghanaians if he replicates that form for the Black Stars having missed the Nations Cup because of injury.

Also recovering from injury is John Mensah who missed the tourney in South Africa becasue of injury and his return to the bench for Rennes is a positive sign for Ghana.

England-based Emmnauel Frimpong is chasing his Ghana debut as his showing with Fulham has even prompted coach Martin Jol to make a move for a permanent deal for the midfielder.

Another youngster fighting for a place in the Black Stars squad is Germany-based Baba Abdul Rahman who has been a revelation in the German top-flight at the left-back position where Ghana has problems.

Samuel Inkoom made his debut in the French league over the weekend in the right wing position and he will be seeking a place in the Black Stars squad as a utility player.

Another player who has not been in the squad for a while is Charles Takyi who was on target for his Danish club Horsen in the 2-0 win over Odense.

Newboys Mubarak Wakso, Christian Atsu and Rabiu Mohammed have all been impressive for their club since the Nations Cup.
