Birmingham boss Gianfranco Zola \'was close\' to Inter Milan job

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola was close to landing the Inter Milan job this season.

That's according to his Birmingham City assistant Pierluigi Casiraghi.

The Italian giants sacked Frank de Boer as their manager after just 85 days in charge at the San Siro.

And Casiraghi has revealed that Zola was seriously considered as a replacement for the Dutchman before they opted for Stefano Pioli.

"We were close up until the last second when they chose Pioli," Casiraghi told Mediaset. "I would've been Zola's assistant manager.

"It's a pity, because it would've been a great opportunity for us."
