John Paintsil tipped for Black Stars return

Black Stars management committee chairman George Afriyie is unable to confirm if indeed experienced John Paintsil has been handed a return to the team.

The Maritzburg United defender is set to make a return to the Black Stars for the opening 2017 AFCON qualifier against Mauritius as revealed by Ghana's leading football website, GHANAsoccernet.com on Tuesday.

Paintsil has been revived since joining the Team of Choice to put himself back in contention for an international return.

Coach Avram Grant is rumoured to have penciled the experienced full-back in his squad for the game against Mauritius.

But management committee chief George Afriyie says he is unaware.

“I am currently unaware if John Paintsil has been called up to the Black Stars,” he said.

“He is a very good player and one of the most capped player in the Black Stars.

“So it is very important that we keep tabs on all these players and he has done well in South Africa where I have read he has been offered a two-year renewal on his contract.

“It means he is doing well for his club but then I cannot confirm if the coach [Avram Grant] has invited him to the Black Stars.”

John Paintsil was awarded the Best Foreign player at Maritzburg having completed 27 starts for the side that finished 8th in the PSL.
