John Mensah suffered an injury

Ghana defender John Mensah's chances of playing at the 2014 World Cup is hanging in the balance after suffering injury in the Slovakian top-flight at the weekend.

Mensah, who was hoping matches for Nitra would help him secure a place in Ghana's squad, suffered the injury setback on Saturday which has left his chances of playing in Brazil in doubt.

The 31-year-old was replaced after just 11 minutes into FK Nitra's game with Trencin in the Corgon Liga.

Details of the former Olympique Lyon and Sunderland center-back is expected to emerge on Monday as Nitra doctors will assess the extent of his injury.

Mensah, former Black Stars captain, was hoping to maintain his fitness and gain regular playing time and bid his time back into the Ghana national team.

But the latest injury could affect his chances of making the James Kwesi Appiah's squad for the World Cup.

I trust John Mensah more than any of the defenders we have in the squad. I hope he gets well soon.

the earlier we forget about this chap the better. i do remember him limping off in several games in his last cup of nations,to the annoyance of even Joe Addo. he would be wasting the lost, and i hope it is given to a more promising and fit defender. Adeius John.

Exactly what I have been saying. He would be a waste of the defensive spot. In Afcon 2012, he played and scored against Botswana, then limped off and didn't face Mali or Guinea in the group stages, then he came back to face Tunisia where he scored again only to limp off again. Then that was it for him for the entire tournament. He is really injury prone and will cause us at the wc. He is no doubt a good player but he won't be as reliable because of his injuries. The spot should be given to someone who can actually play full games and dont have to substituted and then miss several games. I believe Ghana can go far in this tournament and we need not only good players, but ones that can be relied on in the long stretch

Stephen appiah, the legendarily Ghanaian captain was one of the most injury prone players in south Africa but was the most outstanding player for Ghana during the few hrs he played for us!!

@ selfmade no player is injury but you and i know that john"The rock of Gibraltar" is an injury prone. Selfmade as a coach would you risk taking an injury prone player where you dont realy know whether he can play all ghana matches at the expense of a fit player? Even as good as john is,It will be better for to concerntrate on his club career. John mensah has served the blackstars very well and we all appreciate it. But there comes a time to call it a day in the blackstars and the time now. Guys like john mensah,Richard olele kingson and john pantsil must all forget the stars and pave way for the younger and more hungrier. The time is now for AA to put the confidence in the defenders he has.

Ghanaians should stop this hypocrisy of behaving like an ostrichs burying our heads in the sand pretending all is alright but is contrarily!! Our Ghanaian lineup is made up of oldies with the EXCEPTION OF DEDE, JORDAN, AK( Adam kwarasey) and kpb!! The rest are all using their FOOTBALL AGE and I want anyone to challenge me on this! IIn fact some of our so called younger players are older than john mensah in real life and SOME OF OUR SO CALLED YOUNG BOYS PLAYED LIKE OLD MEN!!! Is about time we stop this hypocrisy, stop deceiving ourselves, stop massaging our egos and face reality! If people wants to use age as the basis of selecting our WC squad, then with the exception of the aforementioned players above, the rest of our squad can't fit because they are all OLD MEN with fake football certificates!!

Ghanaians are funny, talking about John Mensah to play for black stars in World Cup 2014. My brothers John Mensah cannot play in a competitive tournament like World Cup. Due to his long time injuries. Even in our previous World Cup games he was then a doubt for some matches and he sometimes passes late fitness test. Injury has ruined his football carrier, he's a player I love so much. Because he's loyal, and very patriot. He can't play for the current black stars so please let's encourage our coach and the current squad we have to go to brazil and represent the good name of mother Ghana. Again if the GFA has something to help the national team I think they should be honest to themselves and the players. Also I think coach Akwasi Appiah should have some tactical improvement in our coming games. Sometimes his tactics are bad and makes the players play so bad like fowls. God Bless GHANA!!!

We need to stop this practice of wanting old players on the team. Youth and energy is important in these cases.

@ Keith.... An injury proned john mensah was the TOP SCORER FOR GHANA in the 2012 afcon!! His goals qualified us from the group stages after opening the scoring for us against Botswana and then his second goal contributed by qualifying us to the semi-finals against Tunisia!!! That was an awesome achievements and no mean a contribution for a player who has been tagged as INJURY PRONED AND OLDIE by Ghanaians!!! Whiles this injured john mensah was busily banging in the goals for Ghana, our so called injury free and fit players were casting spells and voodoo on one another!! In afcon 2012, the TWO MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYERS for Ghana were JOHN MENSAH AND PAINTSIL and I want anybody to challenge me on this!! Before the tournament started in gabon-eq guinea, Ghanaians were busily vilifying these two players calling them names but they proved the cynics wrong with such an awesome performance!!! The WC is not a joke and with this defence, we ll be humialited if we don't take care!! This Ghana defence was torn apart by turkey, Mali, Dr Congo, Zambia, Montenegro and COMMON CAPE VERDE and am just wondering how we going to fare against germany, Portugal and the USA!!

True that. When I watch Ghana games on YouTube, It is evident the CHAN back four is better than Black Stars PENALTY PRONE and SHORT STATURE back four. The CHAN team also beat the same Congo Team that the Black Stars could not beat during AFCON 2012

@selfmade bro noing is questioning john mensahs qualities because we all know that when john is fit, ghana cant do without. This has got nothing to do with hypocrisy but rather we are talking about real facts. When was the last time john stayed injury free? Selfmade would you as a coach nominate an injury proned player eventhough u know his injury status? That will be unproffessional of a coach to act like this. John has been in the game for a lobg time and i will advice him not to destroy the beautiful name he has made in soccer. Its about time to give the other guys their chance. Stephen Appiah is a good example there,he called it a day in the national team by pacing way for others. Johh should be wise and call it a day.

Stephen appiah did the right thing by paving way for the younger ones. Besides that john mensah does not look sharp anymore. He has been out for a long time. In all the games he played for fc Nitra john didnt go the long distance. He was always subtituited because they know he is not fit. I will always praise john for his good works to the stars but ask yourself why he landed in slovakia of all places? Werent there better countries and teams looking for his services? Your guess is good as mine

Who are those fools who want old cargo john mensah to be included in the in the world cup ?then we need to call tony baffoe, emmanuel armah, issac Asare, Joe addo etc john was once my favourites defender in black stars it therefore good for him to call it a quit for the young energetic ones
