Breaking News: CAF general secretary Hicham Amrani resigns
Hicham El Amrani

Morocco's Hicham el Amrani has resigned as the secretary general of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) with a new leadership set to takeover.

The 38-year-old slapped in his resignation letter on Sunday morning as massive changes loom for Africa's football governing body.

Amrani leaves the Cairo-based organisation after just eight years in the post with Ahmad set to take over the President of the continental body.

"It is with great regreat that I hereby inform you that I am leaving today my position as CAF General Secretary, after eight years spent within the Confederation of African Football," Amrani wrote in a letter sent to all federations across Africa.

His position became untenable after Issa Hayatou lost the election earlier this month as he was seen to have carried out unpopular decisions under his reign.

Amrani and Hayatou are under investigation over the television rights deal awarded to French company Lagardere which made his further stay at CAF difficult.

Amrani's appointment to the General Secretary's position was seen as a swift rise for the man who joined Caf in 2009.

He left his job as the Asian Football Confederation's Marketing Manager to become Caf's assistant secretary general, working closely with Fahmy.

Fahmy's 28-year tenure as chief executive of the continental body was stable.

An emotional Fahmy then broke down in tears and spoke of how "difficult" it had been for him to leave the confederation.

Amrani was the acting secretary general since October 2010 after the departure of Fahmy before he was confirmed by the Executive Committee.

The Moroccan was 32 when he joined CAF.
