Ghana handed tricky draw for 2013 AFCON finals

Posted On Wednesday, 24th October 2012

The Black Stars have drawn DR Congo, Niger and Mali

By Patrick Akoto

Ghana have drawn Mali, Niger and DR Congo in the group phase of the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

The draw for the continental showpiece was held on Wednesday night in South Africa.

The Black Stars are housed in group B where they will engage old foes Mali and DR Congo as well as Niger in Port Elizabeth.

Ghana and Mali have been drawn in the same group for the second time and the encounter will ignite bitter-sweet memories.

The Black Stars beat Mali 2-0 in the group phase at the 2012 Nations Cup held in Gabon and Equitorial Guinea but the Eagles avenged that defeat by overcoming the Black Stars by the same scoreline in the third-place play-off.

The Ghanaians will face former coach Claude Leroy who is now in charge of  DR Congo.

The Congolese could be tricky customers with games between the two countries producing engrossing results.

The easiest task however could be the game against Niger, who will be making only their second Nations Cup appearance after beating Guinea in the qualifying round.

Group D could be described as the ‘group of death’ after favourites Cote D’voire were paired against North African giants Algeria and Tunisia as well as Togo.

Host South Africa are in group A and will battle Angola, Morocco and debutant Cape Verde in Durban.

Defending champions Zambia were also handed a tricky test in Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in group C.

The 29th edition of the African Cup of Nations will take place between January 19-10 February, 2013.

  1. city says:

Interesting so Kalusha picked Nigeria after all……i don’t see any tough team in our group {GH}, Group ‘D’ is the group of death.

  2. Anokwale says:

Looking at the groups, all groups are evenly distributed. There is a good argument that Ivory Coast was actually given the toughest draw.

    GROUP A (Durban)
    A1 – South Africa
    A2 – Angola
    A3 – Morocco
    A4 – Cape Verde

    GROUP B (Port Elizabeth)
    B1 – Ghana
    B2 – Mali
    B3 – Niger
    B4 – DR Congo

    GROUP C (Mbombela)
    C1 – Zambia
    C2 – Nigeria
    C3 – Burkina Faso
    C4 – Ethiopia

    GROUP D (Rustenburg)
    D1 – Cote d’Ivoire
    D2 – Tunisia
    D3 – Algeria
    D4 – Togo

We should be able to top this group.

  9. keith from germany says:

a very interesting group we have there.i will never underate dr congo who are for me by far our toughest opponent in the group.

  10. Rasheed says:

I doubt if Kwesi Appiah can win a match in this group.

  11. Ekford says:

Pls reporter notn is tough here so stp panikn n shivern okay.

  12. Anokwale says:

Group A is a group where any two can get through.
Group B is a group where it should be Ghana and Mali but if Ghana or Mali slip up, (which can happen) DR Congo or Niger could slide on through. I have a feeling that either Ghana or Mali will mess up. We shall see.
Group C looks like a clear Zambia and Nigeria go through. However, I can see Burkina Faso pulling an upset against Zambia. Ethiopia is likely to more competitive than most expect but their lack of defense might sink them.
Group D is tough. I think Ivory Coast is clearly superior and will find a way through. However, Tunisia, Algeria and Togo can all handle themselves well. What I can say is that who ever comes out of this group is going to be confident in the knock out stages because they would really have been tested.

    • Africanus says:

Very good comment. But I think that Ghana’s group is more tricky than you think. DR Congo can pull a surprise. They should not be underrated. Ghana, Mali and Dr Congo any two can go through.

  13. Kings of africa zambia 4 u says:

Its zambia all the way. we need to meet perenial customers ghana in semis cuz thats a free ride to the final

    • Ghanaman says:

Nigeria and Burkina Faso have better players than you ugly apes

      • nwamkwo says:

stupid fool no wonder ur so black that all your women stink

        • Bediako Asare says:

Who are darker between Ghanaian s and Zambians on average? You are such a fool. Everybody knows that most west Africans have a darker tone compared to the average sub Saharan African.Get a life! Ugly charcoal Ghanaian.

      • Mwansa says:

U idiot Nigerian was outplayed at Angola 2010 and only managed to go through on penalties.

Nigeria is just as good as Ghana… u performed 30years ago…

      • Bediako Asare says:

Hahaha better players? You claim to have better players why haven’t you won the AFCON in the last 31 years? CIV boasts some of the the world’s biggest soccer names. What have they achieved in the recent past? Senegal just got banned from AFCON 2013. Cameroon has been left out. Football is not won by names my friend. It is won on the pitch. The Egyptian team that won the AFCON back to back three times, how many stars do you know from that team? How many stars do you know from Zambia? It is such thinking that will hinder you from winning the cup.Football has changed so much brother. Names don’t matter any more!!!

  14. KMENS says:

So far, grp D is the toughest cos all the teams have played in the World Cup b4.

  15. gently john says:

    Hmmmmmmmm we will see,

  16. Chidi says:

this stupid bastards from Zambia will have their own taste of medicine…Nigeria will easily dispatch those smelly idiots to their God-forsaken hovel of a slummy piece of balderdash called a ”country” i remember us thrashing that worthless team with our home-based team in a friendly match recently played…i expect the Big guns Ghana,Nigeria, and CIV to meet at some point…though i see Algeria upsetting CIV in their group but time will tell…all i know is AFCON 2013 will be the best tournament ever :)

  17. mayuka-southampton, england- ghana killer says:

DR congo will beat ghana.. Remember the name Mbokani of anderlecht the new Drogba. While zambia will be walloping ethopia 10-0 congo will be bashing ghana.

  18. kimco says:

ghanaman and his sad ways of communication, can never be beat. *must brace self for incomming childish insults*

  19. OK says:

@Chidi shut up u uncivilized Ape, ur not a Nigerian, ur a burnt black typical Ghana man with low mentality sydrome. Stop using Nigeria name U primitive slowpoke ass hole before Amadioha will strike u dead. Typical of any Ghanaian, noise makers, talkative, always insults anyhow. But nothing but slowpoke ugly ape who worship whiteman( Obroni). Hahaha Chidi u want Nigeria – Zambia bashing, ur a failure, u can’t get what ur looking for, because Nigerians are great mind we discuss IDEA, BUSINESS and not people, unlike small mind Ghanaians that discuss people. Black is beautiful but Ghana made it dirty.

  20. Truth says:

Talk is cheap. The empty drum makes the loudest noise!! I laugh, what is good about Black Stars (BLACK MAGIC), what a very lame and silly nick to give a nation, let me tell u, the Ghanaian team is just fadeing away, u guys are underachiever now and forever. Here are d facts…. Ghana got beaten by Zambia and Mali in d last nations cup as well as lowly rated Liberia whiped ur team black asz 2-0.

  21. kantoose says:

Appiah should know that CLAUDE LEROY has been a former coach of Ghana will try to slip a win over Ghana by defending and playing counter. Just like HERVE RENARD who also knew Ghana did with zambia at the past Afcon. But this time lesson learnt, IT WILL NOT WORK. APPIAH SHOULD ALWAYS PSYCHE THE DEFENDERS UP BEFORE AND DURING GAMES. AND ATTACK WITH CAUTION. WE HAVE GOOD PLAYERS. WE WILL SAIL THROUGH EASILY.

  22. opoku says:

ghana group no comment about it
