Breaking News: Sports presenter Kofi Asare Brako 'Abatey' quits Asempa FM, lawsuit hangs
Ababtay has left Asempa FM

One of Ghana’s leading sports presenters Kofi Asare 'Abatey' Brako has quit his radio station Asempa FM as the crisis over an impending $3m defamation and libel lawsuit mounts, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

Abatey, who is under siege with the lawsuit from the Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi over his recent libelous broadcasts, looks to have jumped before he is pushed by the radio station.

Ghana's leading sports news website www.ghanasoccernet.com can exclusively report that he slapped in his resignation letter last week after disagreements over discussion started over how to approach the legal case.

The experienced broadcaster has negotiated a secret exit by signing a bumper deal with a soon-to-be established radio station.

Before the court starts hearing the legal case against Asare Brako, he is seeking to consolidate his future in the industry before Asempa FM decides to sack him at the end of the legal case.

Moses Antwi Benefo, PJ Mozey, the former sports presenter on the radio station is likely to return to his position following Abatey's decision to quit.

A meeting of the CEO of the company Kwesi Twum, sports director Sammy Yirenkyi, sports presenters Patrick Osei-Agyemang affectionately called ‘Songo’ and Kofi Asare-Braako aka ‘Abatay’ and other high ranking officials has been scheduled for this afternoon.

Pressure from the board is mounting on the CEO of the company Kwesi Twumto sack Â sports director Sammy Yirenkyi for overseeing recent broadcasts which has been condemned as one-sided yet he failed to rein in his presenters.

An e-mail circulated by Twum last month complained about the shambolic standards on the radio station was not actioned which might also lead to serious sanctions.

While the crisis is mounting with serious consequences for the presenters, Brako was secretly negotiating an exit from the radio station to Vision FM – new radio station to be set by a pharmaceutical tycoon Tobinco.

He has now sealed the deal, GHANAsoccernet.com understands.

Nyantakyi has filed a defamation and libel lawsuit against Asempa FM and two of its sports presenters  for labelling him as a thief after ‘years of consistent lies and negative campaigns’ against him.

Multimedia Group Limited, the holding company of Asempa FM, and Songo and Abatay have been served the writs of defamation.

The lawsuit claims that false reports about him were “broadcasted by Asempa FM throughout the world” via the internet and has severely damaged his reputation good name.

Lawyers for Nyantakyi are seeking punitive damages for libellous statements calculated at damaging his reputation in the eyes of the public.

Ghana’s leading football official says Asempa FM and its reporters damaged his reputation and he is seeking 10 million GhC10m ($3m) in the suit.
