Buffon: Juventus don’t want Leicester City

Published on: 15 March 2017

After helping Juventus to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has admitted that he hopes to avoid Leicester City in the next round.

The veteran kept a clean sheet as Juventus defeated Porto 1-0 on Tuesday evening, to secure a 3-0 aggregate win and book their place in the last eight. Meanwhile, Leicester overturned a 2-1 first leg deficit against Sevilla, with a 2-0 home win, to also go through.

For Buffon, the Bianconeri’s victory was proof of the quality in the squad, but the 39-year-old is wary of facing Premier League holders Leicester.

“We are amongst the top eight teams in Europe and have improved a lot over the past few years,” Buffon told Premium Sport after the final whistle at the Juventus Stadium. “We set ourselves a goal five years ago; Juventus should always be in the quarter-finals.

“Leicester are the team I want to avoid. They are a dangerous team with enthusiasm and they have the ability to hurt teams who want to take the initiative.”

This is the third time Juventus have reached the quarter-finals in the past five seasons.
