Ex-Ghana captain Stephen Appiah won the 2018 Calcio Trade Ball Order of the Star Award at a ceremony on Sunday in Accra.

Appiah, now a member of the Black Stars technical team, was honoured for his sincere appreciation of his consistent excellence in football, for both club and country.

He played all the junior national teams and captained Ghana to qualify and play in their first FIFA World Cup finals in Germany 2006.

Appiah recounted how another ex-Ghana international Mohammed Gargo feigned injury to pave way for his selection as a trialist at Udinese.

“There is this special person who made it possible for me to get a contract in Italy and this special person is Gago Mohammed. I want to dedicate this award to Gago Mohammed. I will always be grateful to you (referring to Mohammed Gago). Anywhere I talk about my career, I will mention your name. I went to Italy as a young boy. I didn’t know anything about the food but through hard work, I’m standing here today as a proud man”, Appiah remarked.

Appiah also played for Parma, Brescia, Bologna and Cesena before hanging up his boots.
