CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Below par Man Utd held by PSV Eindhoven

Published on: 25 November 2015

Manchester United failed to progress into knockout stages of the Champions League after being held 0-0 by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford meaning qualification goes down to the final game in Group B.

In a group as tight as this PSV for the first half hour were content to defend in depth and invite United to break them down. The host's remained patient and enjoyed the bulk of possession but rarely threatened the visitors other than a Matteo Darmian cross which just failed to find the onrushing Wayne Rooney.

PSV knew a draw or a win would keep their hopes alive of a last 16 place but to invite pressure was a dangerous game particularly as their last away success in this competition was seven years ago, and only in the last 15 minutes of the first period did they break out of their shell and cause United issues in defence.

With the Dutch outfit committing men forward this allowed the home side to finally have space to exploit leading to a number of chances for both teams. A quick break saw Jorrit Hendrix test United keeper David de Gea then a mazy run from Joshua Brenet almost took him clear on the hosts goal.

But the Red Devils had chances of their own but a mixture of poor finishing and smart stops from Jeroen Zoet thwarted Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin then the keeper slipped almost allowing Rooney an open goal opportunity.

After the break PSV grew in confidence and continued to take the game to United who became laboured in their build ups allowing Eindhoven their own periods of attacking play. And suddenly the Old Trafford crowd were becoming anxious and frustrated as the PSV supporters began making all the noise.

Jesse Lingard had a marvellous opportunity on 73 minutes to settle the host nerves but when the ball broke to him unmarked some fifteen yards out he blasted over.

PSV were now dominating play and looked the likelier to score as United faded and Eindhoven comfortably saw out time to claim a deserved point leaving the home side needing a result from their trip to Wolfsburg.
